Episode one: Life Changing part 1
Sean was in his room reading. He was tired from working 16 hours that day as a nurse at White River hospital. He took the job because he liked helping people, but he didn’t realize how many hours of his life it would steal. In the middle of reading Sean’s phone rang.. “Hello,” he greeted in what he hoped was an upbeat voice despite his hard day.
“Hey there, what ya doing today?” It was his best friend Eli, and before Sean could answer the question with a long and drawn out answer, Eli continued. “Wanna come to the bar with Fire and I?”
“I really don’t like going to the bar, Eli. I don’t like drinking, especially after a sixteen hour shift.”
Fire just wanted to know. Hey, you know since you’re not up to going to the bar. We can come over.” Again he spoke without response. “I’m not really a bar fly myself. Maybe-- we could do a guy thing tonight, you know-- like the chicks do.”
“A slumber party?” Sean said with some reluctance.
“But a more manly version.”
Sean couldn’t help, but laugh. Eli always found a way to get a laugh out of him even when it seemed that such an action might be hopeless. “Alright, let me just get this room cleaned out. I think we need sleeping bags or something.”
“This is gonna be fun, man.”
Sean had a room to himself in the basement which he had planned to leave when he was ready, and financially sound. He gave the entire basement a cleaning, and pulled out two sleeping bags he had used for a family camping trip the summer previous. He called for a pizza delivery of Hawaiian which happened to be his favorite. He went upstairs to the sound of a knocking on the door.
“Hey,” Eli greeted, handing Sean a package of popcorn with a grin. “I think we need this for our manly slumber party.”
“Oh, that’s what we’re calling this,” remarked Fire from behind Eli. Sean snorted, and shut the door. Eli was the younger of the two brothers by two years, making him eighteen, but his immaturity level was that of a fourteen year old most of the time, which left his older brother, Fire to clean up most of his messes.
“Mom home?“ Asked Eli already heading for the microwave in the kitchen. Fire was scowling.
“No,” replied Sean in an indignant voice. “She’s out, and she forgot to clean the kitchen before she left so in addition to working sixteen hours, I had to clean my kitchen.”
Eli patted his back lightly. “That’s tough, buddy.”
“I ordered a couple pizzas,“ Sean said, putting on a smile for his best friends. Fire held him back by the shoulder.
“You alright, man?”
Sean nodded. “Long day.”
“I get that.”
Eli’s popcorn was already popping, and when the two found him they saw that he had his face against the door of the microwave. “What do you do when you see flames…?”
Sean threw Eli aside, and stopped the microwave. At the sound of Eli’s laughter, Sean turned, and Fire hit him upside the head.
“Jerk.”
Fire started the microwave again, and allowed the popcorn to finish popping. “Hey guys. Sean, where’s mom?”
“Not home.”
“Good enough. God, I’m tired, working two jobs. I’m just gonna go to bed, and pass out.” “Goodnight, Jake,” called Eli, pulling the popcorn out of the microwave to start eating it “Night, brat” Sean watched Jake head up the stairs, and thought about how he was fortunate to have a five day break. He hadn’t had one in weeks. His poor brother would have to wake early the next morning and work the day and night, coming home only to sleep before doing it all over again. He shook his head to shake off the feeling of resentment. He led his friends down to his sanctuary where he quickly put away his Harry Potter DVDs and Lord of the Rings soundtracks. He never told Eli or Fire that he was able to get away from his life by listening to the music of Middle Earth or getting caught up in Harry’s world. The pizza came. Hey Sean, pizza great... "I know love it" Clean Up Eli need rest tommrow have work I know Alright bug alright "thaks doing Dish"...
