A scream tore from my mouth as a knife sliced along the collar of my dress. I nearly collapsed into the punch bowl if it wasn’t for Kandace who quickly caught that ripped part of my dress. “you know I was trying to cut a piece of cake. This is your own fault Star,” she hissed, slamming a carving knife beside the cake.

I gasped and scanned the decorated dining room where guests danced close to the modern music of the twenty first century. “This isn’t fair,” I gasped, but much of my words were lost in my throat because of the intense pain burning through my chest.

“You are not supposed to be up here. If you had listened to mother’s rules, your dress would not be ruined right now, would it?” With her eyes to the guests, slowly gathering she tossed her blond head back to shoo them away. I was a bug to her, which could easily be squished under her royal foot. Her angry glare turned on me before she thrust me towards the basement door. I caught the edge of the buffet table for a dizzy spell and an arm surrounded my waist.

I lifted my head and a dizziness swirled around me from the deep set sapphire jewels shining at me. “Hey, hey are you all right?” Even his voice was heavenly as he spoke and I couldnÂ’t take my eyes off him.

“What?”

He smiled brilliantly and scooped me up as if I was as light as a feather. “You don’t look very well, you need to lie down.” With the protection of a knight, he lifted my arms to encircle his neck.

“Who are you? Have you come to rescue Dree and I?”

“My name’s Carter,” he whispered. “Now, shh. I need to get you to…” >“CARTER!” Interrupted Kandace, and I felt a jerk, but the grip was on his arm not mine. “Drop her!”

” he laughed. “Come on Kandi I know you can be mean at times, but this girl is seriously hurt.” “I said drop her!” “No! I’m getting her to one of the sofas in the living room.”

Kandace crossed her arms over her chest. “Oh so that’s the way it’s gonna be isn’t it? You’re gonna cheat on me!” Carter’s eyes widened. “You’re kidding, right? Kandace…”

“If you even attempt another step with her in your arms I will never talk to you or look at you again!” >She had created a scene to get both Carter and I in trouble and I felt him lower me to the floor beside the buffet table. “I’m so sorry,” he whispered. With that he left, arms around a now satisfied Kandace.

Through the crowd I caught Dree running towards me. She hadn’t planned on wearing her best like I did. She wanted to get her hands on the party food. She had been wearing her loose white shirt that was much too big in the arms and a thin, black skirt that fell to her knees. Anyone could say that she didn’t belong there, with everyone wearing gowns of magestic colors and materials. I made one of my own, but now the beautiful rose collar was cruelly ripped and skin was easily seen. “OH MYGOD!” she cried pushing past everyone.

“Dree, it’s okay!” “No,” she whimpered and patted her collarbone. “You’re bleeding, oh my god.” Before she reached me a pair of strong arms caught her. “HEY!” I called to the stranger that should never have even attempted to touch my sister.

A loud voice rumbled the room. “What is going on in here? What’s all this fuss about?” It was mother and if Dree was caught there would be punishment.

“Stop, you’re hysterical,” the stranger, that was holding Dree, spoke.

The voice had to have been Carter’s. The husk seemed a bit deeper and when I seeked him out I noticed longer hair. “I have to go, let me go,” I heard her plead the stranger with her eyes on me. “Star go.” She mouthed motioning to the door on the other side of me. “No,” I protested and shook my head.

“Look what you’ve done! You’re ruining my party!” Kandace belted coming towards Dree with the determination to punch her.

I gasped from the pain of trying to lift myself up, but Dree had been right. A spot of blood began to spread along the chest of my shirt. I was bleeding. “Mother will have your head,” Kandace hissed to Dree. “Hey, take it easy on her,” the stranger spoke on Dree’s behalf.

“Shuttup, Angel no one asked for your mouth.” I shook my head. That was Carter, not someone by the name of Angel. “DREE!” squealed mother and I forced myself to sprawl along the floor anything to take the heat off my sister.

“Mama IÂ’m bleeding,” I cried throwing my hands out. “Mama! I need a doctor!” I watched a hand come close to Dree’s face, but a courageus Angel swung her from it. She trusted him. Her eyes came to his face and her arms went around him for protection. The party was ruined.

It seemed as if days had gone by, when really it had only been a couple hours since I had passed out. I awoke to a dank smell hanging over me and I let go of a cough I hadn’t expected. “Is she okay?” Came a small voice, belonging to Dree.

“She’ll be all right, Star. You stay with Angel now.” I felt my eyes open and there was that unbelievable angelic face staring back at me. “You’re all wrapped up now.”

“Carter?”

“We have to stay quiet. Kandace will be looking for Angel and I soon.Is this a dream?”

“A nightmare,” came the resonant voice of Carter’s twin. “Man, why do you even like that bitch, Kandace?”

Carter shot a glare to him. “None of your business.” His eyes returned to me with sympathy. “We have to go… but…”

I smiled at him, and pressed my hand to his cheek. “Thank you for this.” >He smiled back, but a look of guilt crossed his perfect features and he turned his head to motion his brother away from Dree. She followed them to the bottom of the stairs and finally embraced Angel. “Goodbye,” she whispered.

,p>“Goodbye,” he whispered back. His lips brushed her cheek and the two brothers crept up the stairs. I caught a look of interest in Carter’s eyes, but I could tell he was desperately trying to hide it. The door closed and they were gone. We were once again, alone.

After the two guys left the party, Mother came in the room. “First you two ruin the party and now I can’t see you getting supper tonight. Maybe, than, you can think about what youÂ’ve done.”

Kandace came in. “Star ruined the party and I know that now.”

“Bring the drinks that are left from the party, down here won’t you please, Kandace,” Star pleaded through dry lips.

“Ok fine,” Kandace mumbled and left to get the drinks, returning to place them at the bottom of the stairs. “Here.” Mother scowled at us before leaving the room behind Kandace and locking the door behind her.

Star was in pain still from when Kandace sliced her and to top it all off she got sick from one of the drinks. Dree decided she would avoid the drinks, maybe if she was desperate she would risk her life for a sip.

A knock was heard on the window, leading down to where they were and Dree got up to check it out. There they were, Carter and Angel staring in at her. Dree could hardly believe it and she opened the window for them.

“Hey how’s Star?” Carter asked.

“She’s not doing so good and she got really sick from the drinks we were given.” Oh well… we bought some food and drinks for you and your sister,” he offered with a bag that he lifted from the window.

“Thank you,” Dree gasped, taking the bag from him to cradle in her arms. “Mother is holding back our dinner for tonight because of the incident at the party. Kandace yelled at Star because of her stupid mistakes!”

“Yeah we kinda broke it off tonight before I left,” Carter mentioned and walked over to Star to examine her wound. “It’s still bleeding,” he gasped, lifting her small body into his arms.

“Maybe we can get something else for her to wear,” suggested Dree, gripping Angel’s wrist to pull him to the far corner of the basement.

“What are you doing here?” Star wanted to know, narrowing her eyes on the handsome face above her. With a rip he had torn off his shirt to bind around her chest. She gasped from the moment of pain, but kept her eyes on the muscular frame she was now lying against.

“Thank you,” she whispered. You’re welcome. I think maybe you should eat something to keep up your strength,” he put in.

Angel returned with Dree and they helped Star to get dressed into the loose blue sweat pants and baggy t-shirt.

The door opened to reveal Kandace, standing there with her eyes on Carter. “Honey, I think we need to talk about this decision we’re making on our relationship.”

“There is really nothing to talk about, Kandace…” “Really, than why are you here with my SISTERS?” “I can make my own decisions, Kandace now if you would please leave…

“Don’t think you’ll be getting away with this,” she growled at the two sisters, but Dree just ignored her while Star turned towards Carter for comfort. With that, Kandace turned and stomped up the stairs, slamming the door hard behind her.

Star gasped from a new strike of pain that began below her ribcage and snaked itÂ’s way into her shoulders. “You all right?” Carter asked in urgency. “Yes…”

“Look you guys have to leave before we all get into trouble,” Dree suggested, turning her eyes to Angel.

“No.. we could stay and help you fend off the mean old witch,” Angel replied with a determined wink.

“Angel,” Carter scolded for the slander of an authority figure.

“That’s very tempting really, but if you two get into trouble who knows what this family will do to keep you away from us.”

“You need to move around, Star,” murmured Angel and gently lifted her to her feet to try and walk her around the basement.

“I’m so weak now,” she panted. “I must’ve lost at least a pint of blood already.”

“You’ll feel better when you eat.” Together they sat and dove into the bag of food and drink, consuming hamburgers and pop with a fervor.

That was when the door unlocked and both sisters knew that their mother was the next to be entering. They could feel it as they looked at each other in fear. “One of you has to go, you understand?” demanded Dree with the fear entering her voice.

“I’ll go,” Angel volunteered and ran to the window. Dree helped him through, constantly looking over her shoulder for the witch who would step down the stairs. “Thank you again, Angel you really are a…”.

He leaned forward, one leg out the window and pressed a kiss to Dree’s lips, before pulling back. She blushed and gripped her lips in disbelief.
