Chapter 15 - If You See Him

*After Lunch*

“That was great mom. I’ve missed your cooking.” Brian stated.

“Yea it was great Aunt Jackie.” Kevin said. Howie, Nick, Aj, and I all agreed.

“Well thank you. Now why don’t you guys come rest and tell me how tour went.” She stated standing up. They all nodded standing up too. “You guys go into the den I’ll meet you there.” She said.

“Ok.” They said and walked out. Mom and I quickly cleared of the table taking the dishes into the kitchen. She started to walk out the door to the den and I turned around to do dishes.

“Katie aren’t you coming? The dishes can wait.” Mom asked.

“Na it’s ok. You know Brian likes to keep me up late the first night he comes back from tour and tell me everything about it. I don’t want to ruin it for him or me, and if I do ‘em now that means I don’t have to do them later.” I replied.

“Ok. Are sure you’re ok Katie? I mean you know I’m here if you need anything or want to talk.” She said.

“Yea mom I know, thanks.” I smiled.

“Ok.” She stated and walked out the door. I went back to rinsing the dishes and putting them in the dishwasher. About five minutes later I was putting the last glass in there when I felt arms wrap around my waist scaring the crap out of me causing me to drop the glass. We both reached for it but couldn’t grab it before it landed on the floor breaking into a million little pieces.

“My god Nick don’t do that!” I exclaimed turning around. “You ok Katie?” My mom asked from the den.

“Yea mom I’m fine.” I replied. I looked up at Nick giving him a ‘why the hell’d you do that’ look.

“I’m sorry Katie I didn’t mean to scare you I thought you heard me come in saying as how I tripped.” He said sheepishly.

“No I was thinking. Oh well not the first glass I've dropped.” I said taking a step towards the closet where mom kept the broom. I didn’t get far as I stepped on a piece of glass. “Ouch!” I exclaimed grabbing my foot. Nick quickly picked me up and sat me on the counter so I didn’t step on anymore. Thank god he had shoes on.

“Here let me see.” He said after he had grabbed a towel. I pulled my hand away from my foot letting him look at it.

“Katie can you…what happened?” Mom asked coming into the kitchen.

“I made her drop a glass then she stepped on a piece going to get the broom.” Nick said. Mom nodded her head and quickly looked to make sure it wasn’t real bad.

“I don’t think you’ll need stitches. Nick why don’t you take her upstairs to the bathroom and help her clean it up and I’ll clean this up. The first aid kit’s in the hall closet.” She said and quickly tied the towel around my foot. Nick nodded his head and picked me up like he had when he carried me downstairs but this time carried me upstairs. He sat me on the counter beside the sink once we had gotten upstairs and into the bathroom.

“I’ll be right back. I’m going to get the first aid kit.” He stated. I nodded my head and he walked out of the room. He came back a couple seconds later with the kit in his hand. He grabbed the peroxide out of it and unwrapped the towel from my foot. He gently poured the liquid across the cut.

“Crap.” I exclaimed jumping a little from the unexpected stinging and coolness of the liquid.

“Sorry.” Nick apologized and blew on it a little.

“God you think I was a big baby or something.” I said as Nick cleaned it with the peroxide. He looked up at me and smiled at me with that cheesy grin of his. “Wipe that cheesy ass grin of your face Carter. It’s not funny.” I giggled.

“Then why are you laughing?” He asked chuckling. I just shook my head laughing. It had been a long time since I’d seen that smile and I was glad to be able to see it again. “I’m gonna put the cream on it now k?” He asked.

“Duh Nick. I’m watching you I know what you’re doing.” I laughed. He just laughed and gently applied the stuff to my foot then put a Band-Aid over it.

“God it still really hurts.” I sighed gently rubbing it.

“Don’t rub it you’ll make it hurt worse.” He stated gently grabbing my hand a holding it. I looked at my watch real quick to see how long I had till I had to be at school. 1:15 pm just 3 hours and 45 minutes before I had to be at school. “Let’s go downstairs.” He stated. I nodded my head and started to slide off the counter but before my feet could hit the ground he picked me up, again. Cradling me in his arms he started walking down the stairs.

“Nick you don’t have to carry me.” I stated.

“I know.” He stated not putting me down. “So put me down.” I exclaimed.

“Nope I don’t want to.” He argued.

“I don’t care put me down.” I argued back trying wiggle out of his arms.

“Your out of luck we’re already here.” He stated walking into the den. Everybody laughed as he sat me down on the couch then sat down beside me. I looked to see Dad was home early. Aunt Ann, Harry, Tracy his girlfriend, Tim, his wife Marie, Jerry, and his wife Kathy we’re all here now.

“You ok Katie?” mom asked.

“Yea mom I’m fine.” I replied resting my head on the back of the couch.

“Tired?” Dad asked.

“Yes very, six am is too early when you stay up practicing till 11” I answered then I cringed. I knew I was going to get it cause I had practiced with Sarah, Kristy, and Jen from 8 to 10 last night. Then I stayed up another hour practicing and I wasn’t supposed to push my self that hard and I knew that. I had gotten pushed about two months ago during one of the games and messed up my knee a little but it was nothing major unless I didn’t take it easy then it could become something major.

“Katelene Honesty I thought we went through this you are NOT to practice that long under circumstances!” Dad exclaimed standing up.

“Dad I know I just…” I stated trying to defend myself.

“No Katelene you know better! You are not to practice anymore until the game tonight! If you decide to disobey me I’ll call the coach and you know what he’ll do! Is that clear?” He stated sternly. God I hated it when he yelled at me in front of a bunch of people. Wait he mentioned calling Coach that’s not good.

“No Dad don’t call the Coach!” I exclaimed standing up. “He won’t let me play tonight if you do. I won’t practice or anything. It’s very clear k?” I stated lowering my voice again. He nodded his head and sat back down and I walked out of the room. Suddenly my foot didn’t hurt so badly anymore. I walked up the stairs to my room and flopped down on the bed. I grabbed my stereo remote and pushed play and the shuffle button. Reba McEntire’s newest album ‘If you see him’ came on. I laid there for a couple minutes when the next song ‘Heart Hush’ came on but I failed notice the blonde haired figure standing in the doorway. I quietly listened to the lyrics.

His head turned and my heart jumped When I saw that it was him After two long years the love of my life And I just held my breath in Standing there smiling While his eyes locked with mine. He couldn’t hear me screaming on the inside. When I said, Tear don’t you fall He’s let ‘em go Eyes don’t look back Down that empty road And lips you may move But don’t you say too much Oh and please, please heart hush

I said something stupid And reached out my hand After makin’ love and movin’ earth We were shaking hands A million sweet memories Pinballed through my brain The want to hold him one more time Ran through my veins

When I said, Tear don’t you fall He’s done let ‘em go Eyes don’t look back Down that empty road And lips you may move But don’t you say too much Oh and please, please heart hush

I kept looking at my watch Like I had somewhere to be Then he stopped talking And kissed me tenderly

When I said, Tear don’t you fall He’s done let ‘em go Eyes don’t look back Down that empty road And lips you may move But don’t you say too much Oh and please, please heart hush

That sounded like what I had been telling myself when I first seen Nick.

“That’s a beautiful song.” I heard a voice softly say. I looked up to see Nick coming into the room.

“Yea it is.” I agreed as he sat down at the foot of the bed. I lay looking into his deep blue eyes. Everybody thought he wore colored contacts to make his eyes that blue but I knew different. I knew the look that was one his face; it was a look of love, and the love he held for me. His eyes seemed to sparkle like beautiful sapphires in the sunlight. We didn’t need words to express how we felt. There weren’t any strong enough to actually express what we felt for each other. It scared me that I could love somebody so strongly yet be so young. All that fear flew out the window once I looked in his eyes and I think I fell in love with him all over again. All the times I’d wished these feeling would go away and now they only seemed to grow stronger with each passing minute. I was brought back to earth when Nick lay down beside me and wrapped his arms around me. I laid there reveling in the feeling of him holding me. It had been so long, too long since I’d felt those arms around me. I was lying there when I heard what seemed to be the words that seemed to be the way Brian and I ended our phone conversations twice a week. It also was the way some of Brian and Nick’s conversations went. Let’s just say I knew cause I little birdie named Brian told me.

(Girl)

If you see him Tell him I wish him well How am I doing? Well sometimes it’s hard to tell I still miss him more than ever But please don’t say a word If you see him If you see him
