"Hello...this is Mr. MacPhisto"

"Look what you've done to me..."

Mr. Macphisto was something dreamed up by Bono as sort of an aged lounge singer, all swagger and no style. Someone still full of himself and the glitzy look of a Vegas showman, but tired, and with a bit of the devil in him besides (hence the horns). He was notorious for calling people mid-concert, be it the President of the United States or a taxi service to take him home. One night, he ordered pizzas for the crowd. Here's what he said about turning the Mirrorball Man into MacPhisto:

""When we got ready for the European tour,
we realized Mirrorball Man wouldn't really have any resonance.
So we thought - let's boil him down to his essence.
And who is he really? He's the devil."

"Hellllooooo, we're on holidaaaay.
Daddy, if that's you, we're not coming home
until you take the horns off! Byeeeeee!"
-Jordan, Bono's four-year old, on Bono's home answering machine
(called during concert 8/27/93)

"I wanna go home
I'm tired and I want to go to bed
I had a little drink about an hour ago
and it's gone straight to my head..."

This of course, was the Mirrorball Man, who was less well-known:

If I remember right, this character was similar to a glossy televangelist--the "preacher stealing hearts at a traveling show"
