After that there was a country singer who seranated the girls in their evening gowns. I didn't get to see it but I'm sure it was good.
Special Awards
Here is two of the winners, the one in purple is Miss Kelowna and the one in Silver is Miss Ottawa.
Then after this the special awards were presented! The three winners were:
Miss Talent
Miss Ottawa, Ontario
She must have done a great rountine to win talent because she was going against a balleria(Miss Sudsbury), a cheerleader(Miss St Albert) and a tap dancer(Miss Red Deer), unfortunately she didn't perform it onstage! I wished she had so that we could have all seen cuz they did that in 98 and it was so fun.
Miss Photogenic
Miss Niagara, Onataio
This girl had a very nice photo in the program which is why she won the photogenic award.
Miss Congeniality
Miss Kelowna, BC
She seemed like a nice girl onstage and it's nice that she won congeniality since she came to win the crown but atleast she went home with two trophees that night.
More Entertainment
Then all the delegates did a western dance with a country dancing group which was probably good.
Top Ten
(left to right)Toronto, Calgary, Red Deer, Fort. Sask, New Brunswick, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Kelowna, St. Albert, and Sudsbury.
Then it was time to annonce the top ten. In the order they were called the top ten were(in the order they were called as well as in the picture):
-Miss Toronto, Ronda Copeland
-Miss Calgary, Tammy Gislason
-Miss Red Deer, Carmen Kempt
-Miss Fort Saskatchewon, Brigette Hardy
-Miss New Brunswick, Vanessa Boucher
-Miss Edmonton, Sangeet Dhaliwal
-Miss Winnipeg, Sharon Ram-Ditta
-Miss Kelowna, Julie Williamson
-Miss St Albert, Viktorija Kijundzic
-Miss Sudsbury, Marisol Teijeiro
There were alot of big big surprises here! The surprises that didn't make it were: Miss Prince George, Miss Niagara, Miss Quebec City, and Miss Ottawa! I just don't know how Miss Niagara didn't make it into the top ten! Miss Niaraga was very photogenic, looked great in the swimsuit and evening gown competitions! Miss Quebec City was so elegant in the evening gown competition that it was a huge surprise not to see her up there but I don't think she really nailed the interview part. And, Miss Ottawa looked quite good in everthing, and had real stage presence, and it was too bad not to see her up there!
Onstage Questions
The delegates were asked questions from here on in about themselves and their beliefs. I didn't get to hear all the questions because the tape I have wasn't perfessionally done so some of them were cut out but where goes, oh and the questions were asked in random order which, with a group this big, was a good idea. Here are what I can say about this segment:
-Miss New Brunswick was asked:"what is it about owning your own business that appeals to you?"
I unfortunately did not hear Vanessa's answer.
-Miss Calgary was asked:"I understand that you are concerned about our healthcare cut backs, how do you suggest this issue be dealt with?"
I didn't hear Tammy's answer either.
-Miss Sudsbury smiled in a really cute way and said to John Berry(the host) "Hi, how are you?" before she was asked:"You say that the right of the child concerns you, what are some concrete stragies for providing child relief worldwide?"
She anwsered talking about World Vision Canada and how children in poor countries need these organizations and how by us as a comunity giving money that we can do something for the world.
Marisol was so cute with her anwser and had the biggest most beautiful smile onstage! She gave a very nice, very very long anwser. She really explained what she thought and tied it up well at the end! I just have to say how cute this girl was during her anwser! She was just adorable and had a great smile thoughout the whole pageant!
-Miss Winnipeg was asked:"I hear you have a go get it if you want it, don't wait for it to come to you additude, how so?"
She talked about how that additude was one of her best assets, how it helped get her to CSMU, and how it helps her in her life.
Sharon's anwser was pretty good, but the question was pretty hard. She could have come out with a very cute, funny anwser onstage but it was still hard and she did fairly well.

-Miss Red Deer was asked:"I understand that you believe that we should monitor Chesnia(It's a country in Eastern Europe I think? I have no idea how to spell it?) because it contains many dangerous nuclear arsonals, how should we do this most effictively and economically?"
Carmen said slightly nervously with a nice smile that we should monitor Chesnia because it contains many dangerous nuclear arsonals that have the potential to start a nuclear holocost that would in event, end the World. We should do this throught the United Nations and trading organizations, which would protect the rest of the World and maintain global peace.
She gave quite a good anwser and sounded great! She really tied it together well and had the nicest smile while anwsering, I love her!
-Miss St Albert was asked:"You place a high value on education, what are your thoughts on the people who have degrees and are unable to find work in their area of expertise?"
Viktorija anwsered in a very excited but nervous tone about the importance of a resume and how actions speak for more than words and how we should invest in our youth, because by doing that "we invest in the future of Canada, Thank you."
The body of her anwser was pretty good but she really pulled it together which was good.
-Miss Fort Saskatchewan had a really big cheer when she was about to be asked her question, and John said that she must have had half of Fort Sask cheering her on. She was asked:"I understand that the issue of seperatism concerns you, who do you feel is the best role model for Canadians?"
Unfortunately I did not get to hear her anwser.
As for Miss Kelowna, Miss Edmonton, and Miss Toronto, I didn't get to her their questions or anwsers but I'm sure they did well.
Final Five
Final five: Sudsbury, Toronto, Kelowna,
Red Deer, St Albert.
Before the final five were called the ladies we called back out onstage with their escorts and waited behind them as the final five were called. Then the escorts escorted the five that didn't make it offstage after the final five were called.
The final five were:
Miss Sudsbury, Marisol Teijeiro
Miss Toronto, Ronda Copeland
Miss Kelowna, Julie Williamson
Miss Red Deer, Carmen Kempt
Miss St Albert, Victorija Kijundzic
Final Questions
At this point all the girls picked a question out of a bowl and were asked it twice.
-Miss Sudsbury was asked:"Why do you think that Canada is one of the best countries in the World in which to live?"
The microphone that all the girls were supposed to anwser with didn't work, so John let Marisol use his, and in the cutiest little way she said "thank you."
She anwsered by talking about how Canada is a peace keeping country and how it has so much oppurtunity and freedom. She said that Canada is know as the Multi-Cultural Mossaic(I don't know if that is spelt right?) of the World and how different countries join as one to become one country "that I am so proud to belong to, thank you!"
Althought this anwser was alittle long, Marisol did a good job explaining her opinion. She had a really nice smile and she was so cute!
Before Ronda was asked, John asked if they could turn on the mike and the girls started anwsering with it.
-Miss Toronto was asked:"In your opinion, do you think that a single individual can change the World?"
Ronda said yes, but change starts with ourselves and if we want to improve on anything we have to start at home and with ourselves.
Ronda had a good idea ut she didn't explain it enough and there just wasn't the spark that should be there. She was probably just very neverous unfortunately.
**I didn't get to hear Julie Williamson's anwser which is too bad, but since she was Miss Congeninality, I'm sure it was really good!**
-Miss Red Deer was asked:"What is one thing that could be improved apon in Canada to make it a better place to live?"
She anwsered by saying that we should combine our Canadian heritages of French and English and that is something very rich that we should definately promote. It shows that we are a very strong nation and can work to be one together.
She gave the best anwser I heard all night! She was very confident, had a great body to her anwser, and tied it up really well!
When Carmen went to stand with the other delegates she knew that she had done a great job and she had this cute way of walking and flipping her hair around and standing with the other girls.
-Miss St Albert was asked:"Women's roles have changed signifigantly in the last fifty years, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of these changes." This question is really really hard! Thank god when John Berry reapeated it he said "discuss the advantages or disadvantages of these changes" because the other way was just too hard.
Viktorija said that the change in women's roles has been a positive effect. And, although the role of a mother is the most essential role, that having women participate in society benefit our nation...thank you.
She seemed very nervous but came through with a pretty good anwser. It was a hard question but what made her anwser not sound as good as it could was the pause at the end. If she hadn't done that it would have sounded so much better.
Miss Canadian Universe 1996
Renette Cruz
The beautiful Philipino born Miss Canadian Universe 1996, Renette Cruz gave away her crown that night! She gave a speech earlier in the pageant and I'm pretty sure that she did her final walk, like they do in MU. I didn't get to see it cuz it was cut off the tape but I'm sure they did! This lady is very beautiful and represents the diversity of Canada very well.
Runners-up and the new Miss Canadian Universe
All of the finalists were great but only one could wear the crown, so were we go in reverse order:
Fourth Runner-Up
Miss Kelowna, BC
Julie Williamson
I don't think that she was very happy with this! She came to win because she was the first runner-up to Lana Buchberger in 1995 but in this pageant she didn't look the same as she did back then! She looked alot older(although I think she was only twenty in this pageant) and didn't look the same as she did in 1995. I think that she had her hair done much much better in the 1995 pageant because I look at pics of her then and now and she doesn't look the same at all! Even though she didn't look as great as she could(I did love her evening gown though, purple is really her colour) I think that Julie's great interview skills got her to be the fourth runner-up.
Third Runner-up
Miss Toronto, Ontario
Ronda Copeland
Ronda was very nice and very elegant. I did like her quite a bit but she just didn't explain her final anwser enough onstage. After this pageant she went to MCI in 1997 and 1998 aswell.
Second Runner-up
Miss Sudsbury, Ontario
Marisol Teijeiro
This girl had the biggest most beautiful smile onstage and was oh so cute! I really liked her and she was only eighteen at this pageant! I really hope she comes back to CSMU 2000 or 2001 because she would be a great Canadian representitive at Miss Universe.
First Runner-up
Miss St Albert, Alberta
Viktorija Kijundzic
Vicktorija was very elegant and was really great in swimsuit! She anwsered her questions quite well but had a hard time on the last one(because she was nervous) I really liked Vicktorija and think that she did a great job.
Miss Canadian Universe 1997
Miss Red Deer, Alberta
Carmen Kempt
Carmen and her "Little Sister"
I loved Carmen! She was great at anwsering her onstage questions and she is really beautiful! She is such a sweetheart too! I have met her and she is really friendly and sweet and I just love her! I really glad that she was the one chosen to represent us at MU because she very beautiful on the outside but at the same time approachable! She is really just a sweet, friendly country girl!
All the Girls are Happy for the new Miss Canadian Universe.

This was the shop that made chinese gowns for the contestants for a fashion show before the pageant. They were nice enough to lend me pictures that I could scan into my comp and put on this page! They have a really beautiful store that has Chinese gowns along with other types of evening gowns and custom made wedding gowns! If you are in Edmonton or else where I recondmend that you stop by this shop if you get the chance, not are they nice enough to lend me pics but they really do make beautiful gowns! All the info is on the pic above and it will be worth the trip, it's a really great little shop.
