Networks and the online systems at Euro-2002. All the-need-to-knows here!

How will the Network Setup look?
SUBJECT TO CHANGE Our small network of PC's will connected together with UTP cable using RJ45 connectors. Limited use of traditional thin Ethernet (BNC) is possible too. Router and PC's will be connected using several 10Mbps hubs with RJ45 connectors. One of the hubs has a BNC connector that can be used to create a small thin Ethernet network.

Internet connection

The gateway to Internet will be either a:
1. RAD Internet Access Router
2. IBM notebook running Sygate Access Server and a Zyxel OMNI TA128 ISDN adapter.
The last one is for backup reasons but until now the RAD router proves to be a very reliable solution.

IP-address The router does not include a DHCP server that will assign IP-addresses for the local network. This means we have to assign network addresses of al your PC's manually.

Windows 95 / 98 * Open the network configuration application in Settings/Control Panel
* Make sure you have the TCP/IP protocol installed for you network card (check the documentation of your network card on how to do that)
* Open the properties of the TCP/IP configuration and change the following tab's:
# "IP-address" select "specify an IP-address". The right IP-address will be given to you at the con
# "WINS configuration": select: "Disable WINS Resolution"
# "Gateway" ad: 192.168.100.1
# "DNS configuration" select "enable DNS" and add the following IP-addresses: 193.79.242.39 (primary) and 193.78.240.12 (secondary)\
# You have to reboot your PC after configuring your IP-address

MAC: * Open the TCP-IP control panel. Create a new setting:
# Set connection type to "Ethernet"
# IP-address: "manually", the right IP-address will be given to you at the con
# "Gateway": 192.168.100.1
# "DNS configuration" add the following IP-addresses: 193.79.242.39 (primary) and 193.78.240.12 (secondary)
# Save your new settings and activate them
# No need to reboot , a MAC can change network configurations on the fly.

Network Performance

Bandwidth for the network will be 114 kbps when using both channels of one ISDN connection. When using STACK compression Bandwidth will be up to a maximum of 228 kbps. This will be enough to let 25 people go online based on the experience we had last year.

Since we have limited bandwidth and a lot of people who want to go online it is not allowed to:
* read mail
* download files from the internet
* surf the internet
* use Roger Wilco or other voice communication software when other people are online.
For the users of RW we will setup a RW server within our small network. This way RW will not use precious bandwidth from our internet connection.

I want to bring my PC to the Euro-CON..!

If you want to bring your setup to the convention send Speijk, the Euro-CON network Chief of Staff an email with the setup you are going to use so he knows:
- if it's ready to get airborne, and
- how many PC's he can expect.
Don't forget to include your handle in that email.

For everyone that brings his PC setup to the convention there will be one slot on the hub available and one 220 Volt power connector.

The following things you have to bring yourself to the convention:
• If your set-up needs more than one socket, don't forget to bring along a multiple socket!
* UTP cable if you have a network card with a RJ45 connector
* Ethernet cable and a T-connector if you have a BNC connector on your network card
* Additional power cables if your setup needs more then one powerconnector

Label all your cables and equipment to make sure, when breaking up at the end of the Euro-CON, there is no confusion on who owns which cables, etc!

Can I still fly if I am NOT bringing my computer to The Netherlands?

Not all participants will bring their PC, monitor and flightgear to the Euro-CON 2002. The people that have to travel long distances are most likely to leave their setup at home. That means that everyone that brings his equipment has to be prepared that his set might be used by others too. In order to make the Euro Convention 2002 a memorable and pleasant experience for all participants the arranging team has set up eg. rules for the use of computers and other hardware that all participants are expected to follow.

Rules for the use of hardware
1. You must respect the wishes of the hardware owner in all circumstances.

2. Do not touch any hardware unless you have a personal permission from the hardware owner. Prior to the permission the owner will train you to use the unique hardware set (sticks etc).

3. Computer configurations may not be changed in any way even if they seem funny or not logical, we all have our nasty little habits, don't we? :-) And many of us are using their computers for work too. So please respect the wishes of the owner of the hardware.

4. Eating and drinking is prohibited while using the hardware. The hardware owner can make exceptions to this rule, ofcourse.

5. Respect other people using the hardware and do not disturb them or enter the no-go-zone around the hardware unless they ask you to.

If you do not want your PC to be used by others make a note and attach this to the hardware.
