You hurry down to the gate and tell the gatekeeper what you overheard. He stares at you, eyes getting wider and wider as you speak.

When you are finished, he says, "I don't like to hear a bad word about a Brother, but if this is so then something must be done about it. I'll go tell Father Abbot at once." To your dismay, he hurries off to tell the Abbot before you can stop him. You decide you might as well tag along.

The Abbot's office is in a small building just beside the chapel. As you hurry down the hallway after the gatekeeper, you hear the Prior's voice behind a half-open door and shudder.

The Abbot, seeing that the gatekeeper is in an excited state, speaks soothingly and gets you both to sit down. As he listens to your story, his face becomes grave. He shakes his head in disbelief in several places, and sighs.

"You must forgive me if I find this story difficult to accept," he tells you. "You are talking about my right-hand man. Yet, if I do nothing, your life might be in danger. I will assign someone to follow you inconspicuously and make sure that you are not harmed in any way. If, after two days, no one has attempted your life, I must ask you to concede that you may have dreamed the whole thing, and to leave."
