Cupid Strikes The Backstreet Boys

Precious poems, crunchy cookies, lockers full of flowers - find out what Valentine's Day brings to mind for the Backstreet Boys.

Have the Backstreet Boys gorgeous mugs been popping up in your daydreams lately? We thought so. It's hard not to think about these Florida-based babes when Valentine's Day rolls around. After all, they're the Romeos who croon I'll Never Break Your Heart and As Long As You Love Me, those love ballads from their 1997 self-titled debut CD that melt your heart every time you hear them on the radio. So when you start seeing red hearts and roses everywhere, it's no wonder Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, AJ McLean and Kevin Richardson come to mind.

But have you ever wondered what comes to the Backstreet Boys' minds when Valentine's Day arrives? We have, so when we last sat down for a long convo with the five fellas, we asked them to tell us how they feel about Cupid's big day.

Brian is first to admit that he's the kind of ultra-romantic guy who will show up on your doorstep on Valentine's Day with a heart-shaped box of exquisite chocolates and a card that says how much he loves you. Unfortunately, however, Brian (who turns 24 on February 20) admits that he's never had a girl go to this much trouble for him on this most romantic holiday.

It's hard to believe that all the girls in the world have ignored this cutie for so many Valentine's Days, but Brian insists it's true. "I haven't had anything done for me that's really romantic on Valentine's Day," he sighs. "Never."

But that hasn't stopped Brian from following his heart and making the holiday special for people he's liked in the past. "One time, I went to a girl's school," he recalls. "I knew her locker combination, so I kind of broke into her locker and put some roses in there. When she opened it, there were, like, roses everywhere." You can bet that shower of flowers definitely won that special girl's heart!

lonely heart

You'd think that on this holiday, 19-year-old Nick would be totally swamped with candies, cards and other romantic treats from all the femmes crushing on him. However, this gorgeous guy tells us that he's in the same sitch as Brian. When we asked him what kinds of goodies he's gotten from girls on Valentine's Day, Nick sighed, "I don't remember. Nothing special."

Don't feel too bad for Nick because no one has done anything especially memorable for him on the most romantic day of the year. He doesn't mind. "I've never really had the chance to have a serious relationship, [so] I've never had the chance to receive something incredible," he's shrugged. "It's hard to have a girlfriend when we're always traveling around."

However, like Brian, Nick says the lack of romance in his life hasn't kept him from catching Cupid's spirit every February! Nick looks forward to giving gifts to people he likes. "Like I've sent roses to girls' houses, and in school I used to give those little cards," he explains. Who says Valentine's Day is only for couples? Not this single sweetie!

The spirit of Shakespeare

Nick may take a casual, low-key attitude toward this holiday, but A.J. likes the idea of splurging on incredible presents and surprises on Valentine's Day. He's the type of super-romantic guy who gets totally psyched up for this day long before it rolls around! "I'm an old-fashioned romantic," the 21-year-old songster confesses. "If I could do something really big and huge and overdone on Valentine's Day, I would, but I haven't done it yet."

Hopefully when A.J. does get to go all out on a super-lavish Valentine's Day celebration for his honey, he'll give her one of the poems he loves to compose. The creative cutie tells us that he's been composing poetry since he was 10 years old, so you can bet that he's a totally talented poet now! "I write love ballads," A.J. shares. "I have a lot of influences, like Shakespeare and stuff. I write sonnets and stuff like, 'If beauty was in the eye of the beholder, then I behold something more precious than life itself?'" No doubt about it, this guy knows how to melt a girl's heart on Valentine's Day!

Of course, so does Kevin. The 27-year-old Southern sweetie tells BOP that he absolutely loves Valentine's Day because it gives him the chance to get creative. Although Kevin thinks traditional romantic gifts like chocolates and roses are great, he prefers to come up with more unusual ways to say, "I love you."

message in a bottle

For example, Kevin shares, "One Valentine's Day, the girl I had been dating for awhile was working on a cruise ship, so I sent her a message in a bottle. I wrote her a poem, rolled it up, got some dried rose petals and put it all in the bottle and had it mailed out to her ship. I thought that was kind of a cool present." We agree, Kevin!

For Howie, however, it doesn't matter if the Valentine's Day goodies you give are creative or classic. He believes that as long as it comes straight from your heart, it's the best present you could ever give someone. "One time when I was younger, in elementary school, this girl gave me a chocolate chip cookie," the 25-year-old singer recalls. "I've always thought that was just so very sweet. She was kind of asking me to go out with her. I just couldn't believe it. It was so sweet that I said yes." Sounds like sweets are definitely the way to win this sweetie's heart!

So what does Howie do when it's time for him to give Valentine's Day gifts. Needless to say, he's the type of guy who would put a lot of effort - and heart! - into creating a dreamy Valentine's Day for his date. For instance, in the past, he's tied on an apron and cooked up a homemade dinner, complete with candlelight and flowers, for his honey.

As much as Howie loves all the presents and surprises that come along with Valentine's Day, he believes that they're not the most important part of this holiday. "Valentine's Day is the one time you want to be with a loved one," he points out. "That's what it's all about, really." Now, that's the true spirit of Valentine's Day!
