ECW News

In the past, Acclaim had stated that despite losing its WWF license, it would continue to produce wrestling games using the either you love it or you hate it Attitude engine. Everyone in the industry pegged ECW as Acclaim's next license, especially after the league acquired an hourly Friday slot on TNN. Although we could have been happy like everyone else just to assume Acclaim's plans, GI did some extracuricular work and dug up more dirt than the Undertaker. After speaking with representatives at ECW, developers at Iguana Studios, and a mole within Acclaim, here's the real deal.

Acclaim will make an official announcement in the next week or so, but its next wrestling game will definitely be extreme with a capital ECW. Production had begun even before the completion of Attitude, and all the wrestler motion-capture and image scanning has been completed. Work is progressing so well, in fact, that the game may be released earlier than its expected mid-March date.

While speaking with an insider, GI expressed concern over whether Acclaim could truly capture the ECW feel. After all, blasting someone through a table is passe, blood flows pretty freely, and if we wrote some of the crowd chants we'd be busted for distributing pornography to minors.

Our insidious source calmed our fears by saying, "You're talking about the company that released the South Park games. I think you'll be surprised what we get away with in the ECW game. I just saw the developers having a barbwire match and it looked sweet."
