Hey Jabroni Over Here!
Hey hey hey sorry for the delay (college has been killing me this week) but
Mr. Mamma Jamma is back and ready to bring you the news...
My my my, hasn't Monday night gotten a tad bit more interesting. For the
first time that I can remember for a very long time WCW Monday Nitro has
pulled off a rating of 4.0. Of course this was the first hour, when it didn't
have to compete with the WWF but it is still progress. WCW did stay above the
3 rating for the following two hours, so it's not like it got blown away.
What does all this mean? This means trouble for the WWF. This week shows no
problem, as the people clearly chose WWF or WCW. However the one major
difference is that wrestling fans are at least tuning in that extra hour
early to watch Nitro. As more and more people start doing this, people might
be more tempted to stay with Nitro instead of clicking over to WWF, and the
ratings might start to slowly shift.
My opinion on all of this? WCW deserves it. It passed the test with me
this monday night. As I stated before, I have been busy as hell this week, so
I taped Nitro, because I did not get back until 8pm (which is the time raw
starts in this timezone) and watched Raw live. When I watched the Nitro tape
I was quite impressed. Usually if I am watching wrestling on a tape, I fast
forward through the things I do not want to see. I can honestly say this week
that I did not hit that button once, and I watched all three hours straight
through. About a month ago, this would have been unthinkable for the WCW, but
they seem to be really turning it around and for the first time WWF has
something to beware of.
How is WWF reacting to all this? Although I do find it moderately
entertaining, I also view it as a cop out: they are recycling story lines
that have previously brought in ratings. The reformation of DX is just one
example. Further notes on the stucture of WWF: A very interesting thing is
happening in the company right now. A great deal of previously popular
wrestlers are turning heel. For example: all of DX is once again a heel, and
there is a pretty legitimate rumor that Stone Cold Steve Austin is going to
turn heel soon as well. It is a simple fact that people are elevated to
superstardom through being a face with the croud (popular). However, who does
the WWF have left as the main faces. Well there is obviously the Rock. Mic
Foley is said to be jobbing to athletes he believes deserves a good push, so
he is not going to be one of the major stars. It appears that the only other
really BIG face left is the Big Show. I believe he will get a main event push
finally, with the absence of Austin. In addition, now that the most popular
tag teams have either been split up or gone heel (a la Kane&Xpac, and the New
Age Outlaws) it presents a great oppurtunity for a new tag team arise as the
main faces, and elevate their status to superstardom. Expect that to be the
Hardys as well as Edge and Christian.
Well zat does it for me. Have a nice day! and GO JERICHO GO GO JERICHO GO!
