Caedmon's Call can best be described as folk - lots of acoustic guitar, great vocals, and wonderful lyrics. Fun stuff to sing to or study to or put in the background while you read - whatever. They're a band of Christians, and as such, have some wonderful songs that actually challenge or give insight to your faith.
As of now (May 2000) Caedmon's Call has two CDs out - Caedmon's Call and 40 Acres. The first is my favorite, but I love the second one, too. My favorite Caedmon's Call song is Bus Driver - which is about exactly what it sounds like. A guy who drives a bus around town. It's not until the last stanza or so that the point of the song becomes clear, and you're left going 'Whoa.' Other favorites of mine are This World, Coming Home, and Hope to Carry On.
You've got to love a band with a good name - and Caedmon's Call has that! The name comes from an old folk story. "Cędmon was a man who had no talent for singing. He ran away from occasions when singing was required. Once when he ran away he heard the voice of God telling him to sing. He refused, citing his distinct lack of singing talent. Again the voice told him to sing. And when Cędmon opened his mouth to sing, he sang verses that had never been heard before. Many singers and songwriters came after Cędmon but none could match the songs he wrote because he received them through the grace of God." (From their website Bio)
