>> HISTORICAL  TIME- LINE  OF  NATIVE INDIAN TEA <<

The Native Americans were outstanding hunters and trappers. The colder weather in their homeland gave their beaver thicker coats resulting in a high quality fur. The Indians became so heavily involved in the French fur trade their language became the unofficial trade language of the northern Great Lakes. Both the French and Native Indians prospered as a result. The trade and weapons brought the Native Indians wealth and power. At the same time, they became dependent on the French and trade goods. Because they handled the dealings with French traders, the authority of Native American Indian Chiefs increased. Bands became larger and began to cooperate on a greater scale, especially during the Beaver Wars (1630-1700) with the Iroquois. Traditional ties between their clans added to the new sense of unity and purpose, but trade had also brought them their first experiences with European epidemics.

Before contact, Native Indian religion was similar to their political organization. There was little formal ceremony. For healing, they had relied on medicinal herbs gathered by the women and spiritual holymen. These were overwhelmed by the new diseases which were deadly beyond anything they had seen. What evolved was the Midewiwin (Grand Medicine Society), a secret religious society. Open to both men and women, its members performed elaborate healing ceremonies to deal with sickness. Among the Indians, the Midewiwin kept records on birch bark scrolls, an actual written record unique among the Great Lakes tribes. Beyond its healing and religious functions, Midewiwin membership crossed band lines and provided an additional element of political leadership binding the different Indian groups to each other. Within 50 years of their first meeting with a European, the Native Indians were united to become the most powerful Tribe in North America.

The first suggestion of genocide was made in 1727, but this was not “Official Policy” until approved by the king 1732. The French first took the precaution to isolate the Fox from their Dakota and Winnebago allies and by 1728 were ready to strike. The Fox added to this by killing some of the Kickapoo and Mascouten after an argument, and the Kickapoo and Mascouten went over to the French. Under attack from all sides, the Fox accepted an offer of sanctuary from the Iroquois and left Wisconsin.

1746 :  Duc D'Anville's expedition survivors who reached Chebusto, Acadia suffered from scurvy and typhus and 1,135 French had died.  In one of the most unprovoked diabolic actions taken by the Europeans they took their clothing and personal items and gave them to the L'nu'k ( Micmac) who also contacted typhus and spread it to other L'nu'k ( Micmac) also (Mi-kmaq or Mi'Kaq) communities.  Up to three-quarters of the Micmac (Mi'kmaq or Mi'Kmaq) of Nova Scotia perished from typhus. “It is inconceivable that this is an accident”.

c. 1492 - By the time Italian explorer Cristoforo Colombo (commonly anglicized to Christopher Columbus) and his crew arrive in America, more than 300 nations of Native Americans are established in all parts of North America, each with its own name, language, traditions and government. Columbus mistakenly calls them "Indians." This error is continued by later European colonists.

1500 - European diseases begin ravaging natives of North America.

1537 - Pope Paul III recognizes that Native Americans are "truly men" with the right to freedom and property.

1616 - A smallpox epidemic devastates the Indian Tribes in New England Bay.

1633 - In New England, a smallpox epidemic kills hundreds of members of the Narragansett Tribe.

  Sacred Indian Medicine Society

According to the Indians, the Midewiwin came into existence when the servant (Mi’’ nabo’zho - Great Rabbit) of the Good Spirit (Dzhe Man’ido) saw the helpless condition of the A-nish’-in-a’-beg (the original people) and wanted to give them the means to protect themselves from hunger and disease. He chose to communicate with the people through an Otter, which subsequently became a sacred spirit of the Midewiwin. An Otter Pelt was often used thereafter as a medicine bag, which contained the sacred curing items used in the healing ritual. The Great Rabbit gave the Otter the Sacred Drum, Rattle, Tobacco and 4 Herbs to be used in curing all sickness. Through song, he related the wish of Dzhe Man’ido (Good Spirit), that the original people be spared from hunger and have long and comfortable lives. The Great Rabbit conferred upon the Otter the secrets and mysteries of the Midewiwin, and with his Medicine bag “shot” the sacred Migiis Shell into the body of the Otter. The Migiis was a white shell that was sacred to the Midewiwin, and the Otter, having been ‘shot’ at with it gained immortality and the ability to pass on the secrets of the Midewiwin to the A-nish’-in-a’-beg, the original people. In the Native American language if you break down the word A-nish’-in-a’-beg, it means: ANI (from whence) NISHINA (lowered) ABE (the male of the species).
