Chapter 5
That night, once I got home, I took a nice long shower, then put my PJ’s on. I turned on my favorite movie, "Singing in the rain", turned off the lights, sat down and ate my ice-cream.
All my friends wonder why I can eat a lot of ice-cream and not gain a pound.
"It’s my great metabolism." I would say to them. Even though I knew that wasn’t true. Though I ate ice-cream, I usually didn’t eat anything else real fatting and I always go out running. Ice-cream was the only thing I would pig out on and my running took care of all that extra fat.
I watched my movie in the dark. I always have loved this movie. Gene Kelly was one of the best dancers, and he could always cheer you up. This was the type of movie that would make all my bad days turn out good. Have a bad day, come home and pop Gene Kelly into the VCR.
About halfway through the movie, my phone rang. I stopped the movie and picked up the phone. "Hello" I answered.
"Hi, is this Cindy?" asked a male voice I have never heard before.
"This is Cindy, may I ask who this is?"
"Oh, my name is Trent, your friend Christine gave me your phone number."
My mind went blank. ‘Trent?’ I thought to myself. ‘How does Christine know a Trent? Then it hit me. I thought back to earlier today when I remember Christine saying she gave my phone number out to one of Dan’s friends.
"Oh Trent, Dan’s friend." I said to him.
"That’s me. So I guess Christine told you I would call?"
"Yes, she told me."
"I was calling to introduce myself and to see if you would go out to dinner with me Friday night."
"Dinner?" I asked. "Friday?" I hadn’t totally wanted to go on a blind date with this guy. Christine had suggested it and I didn’t want to doubt her, but I had never been on a blind date before.
"Yes, dinner on Friday. If you felt better about it, maybe Christine and Dan can come along. We can make it a double date. I heard they are going out to dinner on the same night, they will probably agree to come with us."
"That sounds like fun." I said. If Christine was going to come along then I would feel better about the whole thing.
"Ok, how about Dan and I can pick you and Christine up at her house about 6:00 p.m.?"
"Alrighty, I guess I will see you Friday. See ya then" I said.
"Bye" Trent said.
I hung up the phone. I decided to call Christine. It was late enough for her to be home from her date with Dan. She picked up after two rings.
"Hey Cindy." She said as she picked up the phone. We always pick up the phone knowing who it is. It started once we all got that wonderful invention called the caller ID.
"Hi." I said back. "Guess who called me?"
"Santa Clause?" she asked me.
I laughed, "No, Trent did."
"Really! He called that fast?" I gave the number to Dan yesterday, and he gave it to Trent this morning at work. I never would have guessed that he would have called so fast. So did he ask you out?"
"Yes, he asked me out. In fact he was wondering if you and Dan would like to double date with us. It is this Friday. Trent heard you and Dan already had plans to go out to dinner. Please say you can come with us instead!" I pleaded.
"It is fine with me, I’ll talk to Dan."
"Trent will talk to him. Why would Dan say no?" I told her. "Plus, you put me in this position and if he turns out to be a dweeb I have you there to save me."
She laughed. "Do you know how you sound?"
"Like a worry wart?" I asked.
"Ya, a big one. He isn’t that bad. He is Dan’s friend and Dan hangs around nice people, but if it makes you feel better, I’ll come, what time?"
"They will pick us up at your house at 6:00 p.m."
"Ok" She replied.
Just as she said that I heard something clatter in the background of the phone.
"What was that?" I asked her.
"Cindy, I got to go, Nicky just tripped over a glass of water." Nicky was Christine’s dog and he got into everything.
"Ok, see ya." I said.
"Bye"
"Bye"
