The Firelights Band
Cebu's most-seasoned showband

The Firelights Band Any showband of the '90s might probably pale in comparison with Cebu's most-seasoned, The Firelights Band, who is turning 25 next year.

You bet, they're the longest-running showband in Cebu today. But despite the distinction, the group is still somehow, affected by the recent slump in our economy.

They are now on the road again after The Arena KTV Lounge gave them their release papers after their contract expired.

Most Cebuanos practically grew up with the Firelights, being Cebu Plaza Hotel's house-band for seven straight years in the '80s, then Balls Disco Club's house-band for over a decade. Those were the glory days, which for them was full of memories.

After their departure from Balls in 1997, they transferred to Hotel de Mercedes along Pelaez St, where they played as a big band, adding four more strings and three brasses in the line-up.

But since bigger hand means a bigger budget, they eventually returned to their original make-up.

The Firelights Band joined the Arena KTV Lounge at Reclamation area last February. But to give way to Arena's other entertainment activities this year, their contract was no longer given life. An insider also revealed that Arena could no longer afford Firelights' asking price, owing to the fact that they're one of the most highly-paid showbands today.

There are several promoters now luring the group today to play abroad. But their kids are what's keeping them from accepting offers.

"Lisod kaayo biyaan ang mga bata, basig ma-misguided unya," said Willie Ygot, the group's female lead vocalist.

Ygot admitted that it's time to tighten their belts "but with a stable band like ours, I'm sure this will survive, as we always did in the past," she added.

"Besides, we never run out of outside show every now and then. So, ther's still no reason to be alarmed."

On the comment that they're not getting any younger, she said "age doesn't matter, bahala mo diha, basta manukar mikon unsay hits. Just let the people be the judge."

It could also be possible that by the time the Firelights Band retires, a new junior Firelights might take over. This early, their children have already formed their own group called "Soul Builders". They sing for a parish church in their community.

But one thing I really admire most about Firelights is their staying power, which could be a good example for the younger generation. The key word here is humility.

"Walay hambog sa ulo, trabaho lang. We don't work individually. And whenever we have disagreements, it all boils to Firelights Band," Ygot explained.

The Firelights Band was formed in 1975, although most of the present members came in four years after its birth. The other members include Lito Ortilano(keyboardist, musical arranger, and band leader), Louie Ygot(drummer), Dexter Cabase(second keyboard), Rudy Puerto(bass), Leo Bitac(lead guitarist), and vocalist Bogart Ygot, Willie's husband.
