Pagoo by Holling Clancy Holling
is a fascinating account of a hermit crab
and the tidepool life around him.
We read this two summers ago and it was SO fascinating,
we'll probably be reading it again soon!
Carry On, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Lee Lathan.
We learned a lot about ships and sailing
from this fictionized
biography of a self-educated young man in the 17- and 1800s.
Poppy by Avi
This book was an adventure about an unlikely little heroine --a mouse--
and her family, their enemy (an owl), and an endearing--if gruff-- porcupine she befriends.
I've never heard my boys laugh so hard!
Poppy & Rye by Avi
This is the sequel to Poppy. We were on needles and pins
after reserving this at our local library. It was well worth the wait!
Minn of the Mississippi , by Holling Clancy Holling
took us on a journey from the source to the end of the Mississippi River.
We learned a lot of facts about history, geography and turtles;
and even chanced upon a full grown snapper, like Minn, on a road
near our house before we finished the book!
The Mary Celeste: An Unsolved Mystery from History
We found this intriguing story by Jane Yolen and
Heidi Yolen Stemple
about a ship abandoned at sea in the 1800s near the Azores.
We're anxious to read the next "Mystery from History" due out this spring (2001)
called The Wolf Girls, about two feral children found in India in the 1920s.
Visit Jane Yolen's Official Website
and Heidi E.Y. Stemple's Website
to learn more about what this mother-daughter writing team are up to!
The Children's Bible in 365 Stories by Mary Batchelor.
This one has a few years on it now and is showing some wear and tear.
Still, it never fails to keep us riveted and show us something new
each time
we read through it.
Perloo the Bold, by Avi.
We heard the first two chapters of this story read by Avi, himself,
on a free audio tape we received after visiting Avi's Homepage,
Naturally, the Poppy stories had us hooked as well.
This one has fantastical creatures known as Montmers, rabbit-like creatures,
and the adventures in their world. It has a wonderful surprise ending,
but we won't tell!
We really enjoyed Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
It's the story of Almanzo Wilder, who would grow up to marry Laura,
and his growing-up years on a farm in upstate New York. We love this
glimpse into life in early America!
By the way, you can read a wonderful
LETTER
written to all children by Laura, herself, when she was 80 years old.
