Grand Opening of the World Cup
Kansas City Star- June 20, 1999

The opening ceremonies definitley appealed to the teen and pre-teen set that makes up an important fan base in soccer. Performing were B-Witched, a female group described(no kidding)as the "natural heir to the Spice Girls;" Billie, who is sort of England's version of Brandy(or something like that); and N Sync, a rerun of the Backstreet Boys who were a rerun of New Kids on the Block. But heavier hitters were also in attendance, including the world's most famous soccer player, Pele, and New Jersey governor Christine Todd Whitman. The crowd was the largest for a sporting event at Giants Stadium, bigger evan than the 78, 817 who attended the Jets-Jaguars NFL playoff game earlier this year. However, the Pope drew the stadium's largest crowd: 82, 948 in 1995. Of course, they could cram a few more in for the Pope:He doesn't need a whole field on which to perform.
