Why is Andrew Cassels So GREAT?
Why is Andrew Cassels So GREAT?
Why is Andrew Cassels So GREAT?
There are so many reasons! First and foremost, he DIDN'T sign with the Rangers. That just automatically makes
him cool. It seems almost everybody else went to New York where all the big money is, and look what happened
to those losers! (Kirk McLean is an exception. He's just too cool for all of them.) Anyway, Andrew used his head, and
signed with the Canucks on July 13, 1999, one day before my birthday. I hadn't known too much about him before, except that
he used to play for the Hartford Whalers, with Geoff Sanderson as his winger and Sanderson was so good when he played with Andrew, he scored 40 goals
but now he doesn't have Cassels anymore so he scores ten goals. And on the Canucks' last game of 1998-99 v.s. the Calgary Flames (who Andrew was playing for then)
Ryan Walter said the Canucks might want to think about signing Cassels. That was an awful game. Cory Stillman ruined it with 3 seconds
left...grr...So anyway, the Nucks did sign him, and I was happy because as I said before he chose to sign with the Canucks instead of the Rangers, and he said the Canucks were one of the hardest teams to play against when he was Flame and he thought Vancouver was a good
fit for his family. So he was already in my good books even though I hadn't seen him play much. Well the preseaon rolled around, and I could tell
I liked him by listening to the games on the radio. He clicked with Mogilny. It's hard to do that.
So I was so happy that the Canucks signed someone just so talented! He's not flashy, but he
kind of quietly goes about his business. He scored 17 goals and had 45 assists (team leader!) for 62 points in 79 games played, was a plus-8 and had
16 penalty minutes. Okay, so he's not the most aggresive player...but what're you gonna do? He won the Canucks Unsung Hero
Award, voted on by the fans. I have to say, the best Cassels moment in 1999-2000 was the second to last game of the season v.s. Edmonton
which was at that time a CRUCIAL game for the Nuckers. They had to win to keep their playoff hopes alive. They were losing 4-3 with ten seconds left when guess who tied it! The Canucks ended up losing in OT, but only because they pulled the goalie because a tie would have been no good.
Well, if you don't think Cassels is great by now,
you just don't get it do you? I'm sure if you saw him play you'd understand!
