MARIPOSA LAZO Peruvian Paso Mare DOB 1985 Age when dsld was first noticed- Most likely first symptoms at 17 with colic/laminitis episode, first lameness that was distinct and continuous was 18 yrs. Legs affected were the rear definitely, some swelling in front suspensory branches by the end She had allergies bug bites and hives also had symptoms of insulin resistance but not tested. She did not have dropped fetlocks/pasterns. Atypical colic episode, noted above, age 17, with laminitis in all four feet, which resolved fairly quickly, no rotation indicated. Short stepping in rear and timing off, before obvious lameness, age 18. As she turned 19, after about 6 months of obvious lameness, flex tested positive and diagnosed as 'stifle arthritis' but vet noted 'something else may be going on as well' and noted muscle wasting at that time on left hind, knucking over position of foot with toe worn off, keeping weight off heels. Minimal response to Adequan or supplements in acute phase. Started with left hind and progressed to right. Intermittant swelling in rear fetlocks, became more constant, overall stiffness in moving. Rear structural changes, standing knuckled over at pasterns in rear intermittantly, shifting from leg to leg, occasional trembling, increased individual white hairs at places over body (previously all dark). Now somewhat shuffling her hind legs and making soft holes in her loafing shed for her hind feet, lying down more. Mari was euthanized 6/15/05

Arabian gelding KOBLA EG owner Traci writes, Kobla was my daughters first show horse and had won many championships in walk-trot, Arabian native costume and Arabian English pleasure. His condition came on suddenly and has gotten worse very fast. His right hind dropped so quickly and is now touching the ground with every step he takes. Although sometimes he acts as if nothing is wrong and runs, plays and bucks, some days he can hardly make it to the barn for his feed. His hind fetlocks are twice the size of his fronts and I feel now he is in pain more than not. Kobla EG pictured at seven years old, Arabian gelding. 1994 Vermont state walk trot reserve champion both pleasure and equitation with only attending half of the qualifying shows! His rider is Chelsea also seven years old in her first year of showing.

Peruvian Paso mare FREYJA. Kathy bought Freyja in Sept. 2005 as a riding horse. She needed a gaited horse for a smooth ride because of some injuries acquired in a car accident. She did not get her own vet check, but the seller had her vet check her including x-rays and the vet said she was fine. As Kathy has found out, x-rays don't tell the story and most vets don't know about DSLD. When she got Freyja, she didn't seem down in the pasterns or if they were just thought it was a breed trait.. Even after an 8 hour ride, she didn't limp or show any signs of lameness. In March a friend was going to start riding her and noticed that her legs didn't look right and sent some pictures to a couple of people on the DSLD-equine list and they said that she looked like she might have DSLD. Freyja dosen't seem to be in pain, but Kathy has noticed that her front pasterns are falling down quite a bit. Freyja is a loving horse and will be Kathy's pasture pet. Although not diagnosed by ultrasound, Freyja is showing classic symptoms of dsld.

Horses listed are with owner permission and the symptoms of DSLD/ESPA is the opinion of the owners.
