Photos from the Brookings and Gold Beach area in southwest Oregon, May 2002.

An Agave and Thuja hedgerow in Harbor.  I am not sure why this seems so weird.
Agave americana flowering in Harbor.
Araucaria angustifolia in Gold Beach.  This is probably the northernmost large specimen of this plant in the Western Hemisphere, although it may eventually grow in the Seattle area.
Araucaria heterophylla in Harbor.  It will be interesting to see if this tree survives long term.
A very impressive Callistemon (probably C. citrinus) with Hedychium in Harbor.
Chusquea cummingii at a bamboo nursery in Gold Beach.  This very interesting Chilean bamboo is hardy in the Pacific Northwest, but very much unavailable (ot at least, very expensive!).
Colorful canes of Chusquea gigantea at a bamboo nursery in Gold Beach.
A large Cordyline australis in Brookings that apparently survived the freeze of December 1990.  There are no specimens this large north of Port Orford until you get to Tofino, BC.
A large Dicksonia antarctica (Tasmanian treefern) in Bandon.
This Leptospermum with large light purple flowers almost looks like some kind of Malva from a distance.
A red-flowered cultivar of Leptospermum scoparium in a private garden in Brookings.
This attractive Phoenix canariensis just upriver from Gold Beach is the northernmost known large unprotected Phoenix palm in the Western Hemisphere.  I wonder if the owners know this!
A gargantuan Phoenix canariensis in Harbor.
Strelitzia reginae right by the ocean in Harbor.  Too bad I did not catch this plant in bloom.
A 10' specimen of Tibouchina urvilleana in a private garden in Harbor.
Washingtonia robusta with Yuccas and Agaves in Harbor.
