Martha Davis is a ForgottenDiva near and dear to my heart (as if they all weren't!). Her voice is unmistakable, evoking more with a crack or a sigh than other "divas" with four-octave ranges. Her work with the Motels was always bittersweet with a touch of jaded decadence. The first two Motels albums, with songs like "Total Control" and "Danger", were the epitome of L.A. New Wave, all neon and hair gel. With "Only the Lonely" they hit the mainstream, creating a classic music video (reaching for every blase cliche to perfect effect). "Take the L" and "Suddenly Last Summer" were also Top 40 hits. Eventually the Motels disbanded, Martha did one solo album, and then seemingly disappeared. Though she never stopped collaborating with other artists, she spent most of the past decade working through her personal demons. Married at 15, mother of two at 18, overcoming the suicide of her own mother, she had a lot of processing to do. Apparently she's got it together now, as she is now touring with a new group of musicians (billed as The Motels FEATURING Martha Davis!) and has released a two-cd retrospective, "Anthologyland". Because her last name is an anagram for "divas",
MARTHA DAVIS IS A DIVA NOT TO BE FORGOTTEN!!!
