Doesn't this picture say it all? Shelley Winters is a Diva for the Ages. Her appeal is timeless, with neither beginning nor end. Appearing in over 116 films, she has embodied the Holy Trinity of the Eternal Feminine---maiden, mother, and crone. In "Phone Call from a Stranger" she played a character named "Binky Gay". She was drowned in "Night of the Hunter", won an Academy Award for "Diary of Anne Frank", and had memorable roles in films as diverse as "Lolita" and "The Greatest Story Ever Told". But Divahood, like everything else, runs in cycles, and it was in the 1970s that she became the Shelley Winters we worship today. After appearing in a series of less than stellar flicks ("Bloody Mama", "Who Slew Auntie Roo?"), our Shelley resurfaced as the one and only Belle Rosen in "The Poseidon Adventure". This heart-rending performance not only revived her flagging career, but introduced her boundless gifts to a whole new generation. Perhaps the ultimate Late Shelley role was in "Next Stop, Greenwich Village", as the inimitable Mrs. Lapinsky. The performance is over-the-top yet indelible, a tour-de-force that once seen is not soon forgotten. Aside from countless other classic film roles too numerous to mention, and a storied personal life (wonderfully chronicled in two autobiographies), Miss Winters has also proven herself to be a woman on the verge of either a nervous breakdown or complete enlightenment on many talk show appearances.
