Wrestling Terms

Angle - A situation between 2 or more wrestlers that is being pushed. For example, this whole thing with Sting being a crow - that's an angle.

Baby Face - A good guy; fan favorite.

Blade Job - When a wrestler cuts himself on purpose with a blade to draw blood. Watch ECW for this.

Booker - The person or persons who makes up the story lines, or angles.

Bump - When a wrestler takes a good shot or he lands hard. Mankind takes alot of bumps.

Dark Match - Matches that happen before or after the tv show for the crowds enjoyment. You will usually see unlikely matches like Undertaker with the D.O.A. all on motorcycles. Or Flash Funk beating a new up and comer.

Feud- A really boring match. Like Jim Powers VS Barry Harowitz was a dud

Feud - When two wrestlers fight with each other over a course of a few weeks. For instance, DDP feuded with Macho Man a while back.

Gimmick - The character of a wrestler is their gimmick. The Undertaker is a gimmick.

Green - A way to describe a wrestler who is out of shape or hasn't wrestled in a while.

Heel - A bad guy; villain. Hogan is a heel.

House Show - A wrestling show that is put on for the crowd only and is not televised. Usually the organization will perform the same matches night after night at house shows.

Job - A verb meaning to lose to a person. Some people are continuously jobbed. These people are called...

Jobbers - Wrestlers who's role is to lose night after night. For instance, the WCW, for the most part, jobs for the nWo.

Kayfabe - The code of silence professional wrestlers keep. Like a magicians oath I guess. 95% of wrestling is "kayfabed", meaning staying in character and not revealing anything secret or not revealing who they really are.

Kill - To discontinue a gimmick that is not creating good ratings. The Sultan has been killed.

Mark - A fan who does not know any of these terms and thinks wrestling is real. This is not a bad thing though, as some smart wrestling fans think.

Pop - The crowds initial reaction as a wrestler comes out to the arena. Steve Austin produces probably the biggest pop in wrestling today.

Push - When a wrestler wins many matches in a row and suddenly becomes so much better than he was before. Disco Inferno recieved a push upon his return to WCW.

Run In - When one wrestler runs in to interfere in another wrestlers match. This starts a feud most of the time.

Sailor Man - Otherwise known as a jobber. Someone who is thrown in the ring to lose.

Save - When one wrestler interferes with a match to save his partner or friend from losing. The nWo does this with every match.

Screw Job - When fans get screwed out of seeing a clean finish. This usually happens on PPV's and the last match of Raw or Nitro.

Shoot - 1) An interview that expresses the wrestlers true feelings and he does not hold back. 2) When two wrestlers stop faking their moves and actaully want to hurt each other.

Sell - To make a move look real.

Stiff - A wrestler who is good for nothing and has no wrestling ability. Hogan is a stiff.

Tweener- Someone who is neither a good guy or bad guy. The Faces of Fear are tweeners right now.

Work -series of events that all go together and form a plot. The Sting angle is all a work. Some believe that the Bret Hart incident is all a work and that it was all staged for the fans enjoyment.
