Books on Africa (Non-Fiction)

This is my list of non-fiction titles on Africa that I either own or have read in alphabetical order. Whenever possible, the book cover is posted on the right with my own brief description on the left. If there is no book cover available by Chapters.ca, there is a Chapters button. If Chapters has both a hardcover and a paperback version of the book, the image link will take you to purchase the hardcover, and the text link will be to purchase the paperback.

Aman:The Story of a Somali Girl Paperback only.
A fascinating look into the life of a young girl in Somalia. This is an "oral" autobiography of her life. She told the story to the author who wrote it for her, as traditionally, the Somali language is only oral.
Authors: Virginia Lee Barnes and Janice Boddy

Into Africa: Journey Through The Ancient Empires An interesting look at the ancient empires of Africa. An excellent book covering all major ethnic groups from Southern Africa to North Africa, and everything in between. It is historical, sociological, and personal. To purchase the paperback version: Into Africa: A Journey Through The Ancient Empires
Authors: Marq de Villiers and Sheila Hirtle

Long Walk To Freedom Only the paperback version is available now, so the book cover will take you to purchase the paperback.
This is the autobiography of Nelson Mandela, most likely one of the most well-known political leaders of our time. Mandela takes us through his entire life, from what it was like to live in South Africa as a young black child, to his presidency with the African National Congress, to his imprisonment and freedom. A book written from the heart by the man who fought against racial discrimination and apartheid.
Author: Nelson Mandela

Of Water & the Spirit:Ritual, Magic & Initiation in the Life of an African Shaman Paperback only. An autobiography by a shaman from Burkina Faso (West Africa). A very interesting look into his life, heart, and soul.
Author: Malidoma Patrice Some

Sangoma:An Odyssey into the Spirit World of Africa Unfortunately both hardcover and paperback are currently unavailable. I am sure you wonder why I put it here then. I read this book and found it quite fascinating as it is the autobiography of a white American who went to Swaziland (Southern Africa) and underwent all the rituals and training to become a sangoma (healer). It was quite intriguing and I suggest looking for it at the library!:)Link to paperback version: Sangoma:My Odyssey into the Spirit World of Africa
Author: James Hall
