Dr. William Banister is one of the world's leading geologists. He discovered
his mutant abilities while at a dig in South Africa. He was about to return to the
surface when the safety valve prohibiting access to the elevator shaft malfunctioned,
dropping the elevator upon him. Without thinking, he tried to catch the elevator.
This is when he discovered that he had increased strength. Earlier in his expedition
he had survived a cave-in by increasing his density. His associates who witnessed this
swore to secrecy. A former classmate of Reed Richards, he contated him and met with him
in Zaire to observe a natural geological phenomona know as tetra pulsar.
While in Zaire, Dr. Banister's innate electrical powers set off a pulse which thrust him
through a portal into a dimension he later would discover to be Hell.
