Today, in the first part of 2000, the club has 104 members of which about half are actively flying. The Club itself does not own any aircraft but many members own aircraft of one type or another. Aircraft belonging to club members range from a Tiger Moth, Cessna 120s, 140s, 150s, 170s, 172s, 180s, 182s, a 310, at least four 337s,and a Citation jet, Piper Cherokee 140s, 160s, 180s, a 235, Tripacers, a Pacer, a Navion, a Baby Ace, an RV4, some Grumans, Bonanzas, a couple of Stinsons, and 2 Lake Amphibians plus a Lake Skimmer. I'm sure there are others that I missed, but you get my point I hope.
We are a member owned club. Initiation into the Club costs $250.00 with a $60.00 annual membership fee. Aircraft parking on club property cost another $60.00 per year (yes that is correct- per year) or $90.00 with electricity. The Club also owns its own fueling facilities with 100LL available at a 10% discount for club members. In February of 1999 we started accepting "associate members" with restricted privleges for an annual fee of $60 and no initiation.
Every year on the first weekend in June, we have our annual fly-in. On the Saturday we have a poker run to get people in the mood, with a BBQ and dance afterwards. We start the Sunday off with a pancake breakfast and some flying events like flour bombing and spot landings. War birds from all over the area make a showing to get their free breakfast and show off their antique aircraft. We try to make it a community event by inviting the public to walk, cycle, drive, or fly in to this event. Longbeach Helicopters has very kindly provided a helicopter and pilot to our Fly-in for the past several years, and taken many people for a ride at minimal cost. Many thanks to Longbeach Helicopters and all our other sponsors for making the Nanaimo Flying Club fly-in the best on Vancouver Island if not B.C.
