My Golf Experience

Up until about 12 years ago the very utterance of the word GOLF made me cringe and caused a bad taste in my mouth. Seriously, At that point in time, I thought I had very good reason to hate golf.

You see, I had taken golf as a required PE class back when I went to a community college. That was a mistake. I went to college after spending four years in the military. I actually had to go one 'prep' year in order to 'brush-up' and catch up with fellow classmates on the prerequisites needed before becoming a sophomore by my third year. I found myself looking at a PE class to take during this last year to maintain enough credit hours for being a full time student.

So my sophomore year was going really great. I had a 4.0 GPA. I figured that since I was fairly athletic that I could ace this golf thing and leave the community college with a 4.0.

Well, to make a long story short, I got a B in that Golf class!! It blew my GPA down to a 3.96! Oh, I was not a poor golfer, it was just that I did not have the patience back then to learn the 8000 different things you gotta go through to just hit the darn ball. My golf swing was not the prettiest thing and definitely not of the caliber of a golf pro.

Then like I said above, 12 years ago, some co-worker suggested we go golfing after work. I choked and sputtered, having visions of my college days and that P.E. class I had taken, but reluctantly rented some clubs and joined him for a round of 9 holes.

Like all beginners, having some luck, I approached the fourth hole, which happened to be an exceptionally long Par four. My drive went straight and true and landed close to 200 yards. I was shocked. I set up for my second shot. A five iron, I thought, being about 180 yards out. Well??? I chose a club, if it was right or not, I don't know. Anyway, I hit that second shot right in the sweet spot and watched the ball soar through the air and land about 1 foot from the hole on the green! I almost fainted. Yes, I walked up to the green and tapped that sucker in for a BIRDIE!! One stroke under par!

I was amazed, my buddy was amazed, I actually completed the course with a score. By that I mean, for nine holes my number of strokes per hole wasn't so outrageous that I quit scoring. Well, that did it, like any golf addict, I was hooked. I must say, I have been enjoying the game ever since and have become a PGA fan watching the pros play the tournaments on the TV whenever I get the chance.
