WWE
ECW
June 24, 2008 – recap by Sassy
Last week on ECW –
Hornswoggle with Finlay defeated Armando Estrada in 3
minutes.
Evan Bourne defeated Matt Striker in 3 minutes.
Kofi Kingston defeated Mike Knox via DQ in 3 minutes.
CM Punk defeated John Morrison in 10 minutes.
WWE’s ECW is broadcast on the Sci-Fi Channel in San
Antonio, TX.
Ringside announcers: Mike Adamle & Tazz
Ring announcer: Tony Chimel
WWE held a draft last night on Monday Night Raw.
CM Punk, Mr. MITB, and The Big Red Machine Kane, WWE ECW Champion, were
both drafted to other brands. Kane
took the ECW title with him. ECW may have lost two wrestlers but they did gain
Matt Hardy, who brings the WWE United States Championship with him. Tazz and
Mike Adamle made it through the ringside announcer’s draft unscathed.
Tag Team Match
Matt Hardy from Cameron, NC
&
CM Punk from Chicago, IL, weighing 225 lbs.
Mr. MITB
Vs.
John Morrison from Los Angeles, CA weighing 220 lbs.
&
The Miz from Cleveland, OH weighing 231 lbs.
WWE Tag Team Champions
Punk was drafted to Monday Night Raw but he is here on ECW
tonight. Hardy begins the match against Morrison. I don’t believe Morrison and
Miz can’t beat Hardy and Punk unless they cheat, oh, wait, that’s all the
Tag Team Champions have been doing. Hardy tags in Punk who goes for a cover and
gets a one count. As thrilled as I am that Punk will be on Raw, I am
disappointed that Hardy got sent to ECW. Morrison tags in Miz and Punk tags in
Hardy. Miz tags in Morrison and Morrison distracts the referee so that Miz can
work on Hardy. I could write what Morrison are going to do in each match without
actually watching the match. Hardy and Punk enter the ring as Morrison and Miz
are in the ring together. Hardy and Punk are doing a decent job as a new tag
team until Morrison pulls down the ropes and Punk goes out to the floor and we
go to commercial break. Back to the ring, Miz has Punk down on the mat. Miz tags
in Morrison and Morrison goes for the cover, getting a two count before Miz
kicks out. Morrison blatantly chokes Punk until the ref makes Morrison break the
hold. Again Morrison distracts the ref so that Miz can work on Punk. Morrison
and Miz deliver a double gut buster, Morrison has tagged in Miz, and Miz goes
for the cover and gets a two count. Punk picks up Miz and slams him back first
into the mat. Miz tags in Morrison but Punk can’t make it to his corner to tag
in Hardy. Punk has Morrison up for the GTS but Morrison breaks out of the hold
and Punk makes it to tag Hardy. Hardy comes in to go after Morrison and Punk.
Hardy goes for the cover on Morrison but Morrison kicks out. Hardy goes for
another cover and Miz enters the ring to break it up. Punk takes Miz over the
top rope, going to the floor with Miz in the process. Hardy goes for the twist
of fate, Miz trips Hardy as he comes off the ropes. Hornswoggle is at ringside
and he distracts Miz as Hardy hits the twist of fate and gets the three count.
Time: 9 minutes.
Winners: Matt Hardy & CM Punk with the twist of fate
with a little help from Hornswoggle.
I started to say the ending was a little off but Hornswoggle
did a great job of distracting Miz and allowing Hardy to get the twist of fate.
A decent opening match for ECW and we go to commercial break.
Extreme Rules Match
The Gold Standard Shelton Benjamin from Orangeburg, SC
weighing 248 lbs.
Vs.
Kofi Kingston from Jamaica weighing 217 lbs.
Benjamin has had it in for Kingston since Kingston had a
winning streak on ECW. I’m not sure if either of these wrestlers has been in
an extreme rules match before but this could be interesting. Benjamin has the
build of a solid wrestler while Kingston spends his time working the ring in the
air. Kingston sends Benjamin out to the floor and then springboards over the top
rope to take Benjamin down to the floor again. Benjamin slams Kingston into the
ring apron. Benjamin grabs the mic and slams it into Kingston’s head. Benjamin
then sends Kingston shoulder first into the steel steps. Benjamin goes under the
ring for extra weapons, throwing several of them into the ring. Benjamin rolls
Kingston back into the ring. And
uses a steel chair to nail Kingston. Benjamin delivers a gut buster but Kingston
is too close to the ropes and Benjamin can’t get the pin. Kingston comes off
of the mat fighting but Benjamin rakes the eyes. Benjamin spends a few seconds
slamming a metal garbage can into Kingston. Benjamin suplexes Kingston onto the
trash can. Benjamin charges at Kingston in the corner and Kingston nails
Benjamin with the garbage can lid. Kingston continues to nail Benjamin in the
head with the metal lid and now Benjamin is down on the mat. Kingston goes for
the steel chair but Benjamin catches him with a boot. Kingston goes over and
sends Benjamin into the corner, face first into the garbage can. Kingston hits
trouble in paradise and goes for the cover getting the three count and the win.
Time: 8 minutes.
Winner: Kofi Kingston with trouble
in paradise
Not a bad second match for ECW although I would like to see
Kingston and Benjamin wrestle during a match. We go to commercial break.
Back from commercial break, Tazz and Adamle go over the
matches for the next WWE pay per view, Night of Champions. Kane is backstage
making faces and we go to commercial break.
Mike Knox from Phoenix, AZ weighing 293 lbs.
Vs.
Evan Bourne weighing 178 lbs.
Perhaps ECW should have drafted someone Knox’s size or Knox
should have been drafted to another brand. Bourne is fast but Knox is huge in
comparison. Bourne slides out of the ring and as he gets back in, he tries to
slow down Knox. Bourne isn’t having much luck. Knox delivers a squash in the
corner. Knox applies an abdominal stretch but Bourne refuses to give up.
Bourne’s chest is a nasty shade of red on one side right now. Bourne comes off
the ropes and tries to nail Knox in the leg.
Bourne does it again and then delivers a high boot to the skull. Bourne
comes off the top rope with a missile drop kick and goes for the cover but he
only gets a two count. Knox catches Bourne and delivers a back breaker, goes for
the cover and gets the win. Time: 2 minutes.
Winner: Mike Knox with a back
breaker
Bourne is a great ring worker but WWE never wants to put him
in a match who equals him in ring work. The World’s Strongest Man Mark Henry
is making his way to the arena and we go to commercial break.
The Big Show enters the arena and heads to the announcer’s
table to sit with Tazz and Adamle in order to watch the next match.
The Big Red Machine weighing 323 lbs.
WWE ECW Champion
Vs.
The World’s Strongest Man Mark Henry from TX weighing
400 lbs.
Henry is like a solid brick wall. I prefer the wrestlers that really do wrestle, like Eric
Bourne, but Henry is one solid wall. This will not be a wrestling contest but
simply a show of strength. The two men begin with an exchange of blows in the
corner with Henry coming out ahead. Kane comes back with right hands but Henry
sends Kane to the mat with a clothesline and goes for the cover but Henry
can’t get the three count. Kane again comes off the ropes with a right hand
but Henry goes for a bear hug. Kane fights back and gets slammed into the corner
post for his trouble. Kane catches Henry with a boot and continues with the
right hands before delivering a high kick to the head that sends Henry to the
mat. Kane delivers a drop kick and goes for the cover but Henry kicks out. Kane
goes up to the top turnbuckle but Henry is back on his feet and catches Kane.
Henry slams Kane to the match and gets a three count. Time: 3 minutes.
Winner: The World’s Strongest Man
Mark Henry
A short match but I’m not sure Kane could have withstood a
longer match against someone the size of Henry. I am surprised that Show did not
manage to work his way into the match one way or the other.
