6-INCH GUN BATTERY AT BAKER BEACH

During World War II, the U.S. Army mounted a pair of 6-inch weapons at Battery Chamberlain firing on the Main Channel minefield at the Golden Gate.

While it was Army policy to keep these defenses top secret, newspaper photographers were allowed to take pictures of this particular battery for the local papers. Of course, the location of the installation was not revealed in news articles. National Geographic also featured this gun position in a 1943 story on wartime San Francisco.

THE COOKIE BRIGADE

On the slope behind the emplacement, the men of D Battery, 6th Coast Artillery Regiment, welcome the Red Cross Cookie Brigade into their area. The gun crews on alert duty bunked in quarters dug into this slope.
