12-INCH BATTERY MENDELL IN COLOR

Battery Mendell, a 12-inch gun emplacement at Ft. Barry on the Marin coast was caught in action by a coast artillery officer during April 1941. Using his personal movie camera, the enterprising officer shot 8mm movie sequences of this battery during a firing practice.

ACTION AT THE BREECH

The loading detail places the powder charge and closes the breech in preparing to fire the armament.

ACTION ON THE GUN AIMMING PLATFORM

As the 12-inch barrel rises before firing, the gun aimmer makes a final check of the range and azimuth. In practice, the actual aimming data is acquired by artillery spotters miles from the gun battery. The data is phoned to a plotting room where aimming calculations are computed.
