MORE GOLDEN GATE ARTILLERY OF SAN FRANCISCO

San Francisco's harbor was perhaps the most heavily fortified port on the Pacific coast. The numerous military bases, shipyards, and defense industries around the Bay Area demanded the strongest big-gun protection the U.S. Army could give them.

BATTERY SAFFOLD IN ACTION

Coast artillery troops trained on the two 12-inch rifles of this battery on the San Francisco coast in the months leading up to war. This battery was moth-balled later in the war when more modern armament was installed at the harbor forts.

CLOSE-IN AIR DEFENSE

A .30-caliber water-cooled machine gun is revealed as its three-man crew disengages the emplacement cover. Automatic weapons like these protected the big gun emplacements from potential enemy strafing planes. Tunnels connected these defense positions with one another in the hills overlooking the Golden Gate.
