Fred Atkins

Born Fred Atkinson in Westport, New Zealand in 1910.

Won the Australian Heavyweight Championship 3 times in 1940, 1942 and 1947.

In 1949 moved to Toronto, Canada and won the British Empire/Commonwealth Heavyweight Title from Whipper Billy Watson.

In 1952 he won the Canadian Tag Team Championship teaming with Lord Athol Layton.

In the same year also won the NWA World Tag Team Title, this time teaming up with Ray Eckert.

Continued to team with Ray Eckert and they won the NWA Pacific Coast Tag Team Championship 3 times.

Won the British Empire/Commonwealth Title for the second time in 1959, ten years after first winning the title, defeating Gene Kiniski.

Became the number one contender for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship, which was held at the time by fellow New Zealander Pat O'Connor.

Nearly won the NWA World Title when he drew a match with Pat O'Connor.

Retired from wrestling in the early 60's, and began refereeing for the WWF.

Trained wrestlers Giant Baba and Tiger Jeet Singh.
Also became a trainer for NHL Ice Hockey teams the Buffalo Sabres and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Fred Atkins passed away in May 1988, leaving a definite mark on the wrestling world.
