Lofty became the first New Zealand amateur heavyweight wrestling champion in 1931.
In 1935 he had 48 matches, winning 42 of them.
In 1935 he challenged Earl McCready for the British Empire title. The match was a draw.
In 1936 Lofty invented his famous trademark submission hold "The Octopus Clamp"
Lofty earned a shot at the World Title in 1938, trapping "Bronko" Nagurski in his clamp but drawing the match.
In October 1938 he won a tournament in Auckland to become the undisputed
NZ Heavyweight wrestling champion.
He also won the Australasian wrestling championship.
In 1940 he won the British Empire Championship, beating John Katan of Canada in Wellington.
During World War 2, Lofty served in the Army, reaching the rank of seargeant major.
After the war he returned to the ring for 4 years before retiring with a New Zealand record of: He retired as New Zealand Heavyweight Champion.
It is estimated that he wrestled a total of 1200 matches in all between 1939 - 1949 in New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, Mexico, Canada and the United States.
After retiring he was involved in many charities. He was the founder of the Northland IHC and the Blomfield Special School for IHC children in Whangarei.
Lofty will always be remembered as one of the greatest and most popular wrestlers
New Zealand has ever produced.
Lofty Blomfield is the only Pro Wrestler ever to be inducted into the The New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame.
