My Black Walnut Coffee Table
Here's a pic of my, as of yet, unfinished coffee table.
Our final project for senior wood was to build anything of
our choosing as long as it challenged our abilities in wood. The picture
is of a huge slab of black walnut that belonged to Randy Schultz (my instructor)
and had been sitting in the shop for 15 years. He sold it to me for $50
(a steal) since he had another one. My first problem was to flatten the
top side as best I could. I ended up using the overhead router for a few
classes. Next it was off to the wood building of B.C.I.T. because only
they had a thickness planer large enough for the slab. For the legs I laminated
a few boards together and bent them in a wave shape. For the other side
I had a perfectly curved piece of driftwood from Victoria. Unfortunately
I ran out of time and still haven't had the chance to finish it. But I
will, because it's going to be gorgeous.
