Trent Reznor (b. 5/17/65 Mercer, PA) Cleveland native Trent Reznor's industrial one man band, Nine Inch Nails, has become one of the most successful artists to emerge in the nineties. Nine Inch Nails combines analog and digtital synthesizers with seek-and-destroy guitar. Reznor's brand of industial angst oozes with alienation and strong but dark melodies. Reznor's initial claim to fame was an explosive stint on Lollapalooza 1991. The sound originally associated with Reznor has spawned a number of offshoots and derivative groups, including Marilyn Manson, and Filter, featuring former NIN collaborators, Richard Patrick and Brian Liesgang. Nine Inch Nails controversial records and videos feature explicit imagery, challenging societal norms. One video, "Down In It" was even investigated by the FBI, when some outtakes from the video were suspected to have been sourced from a snuff film. Reznor's rock-star lifestyle has also generated considerable controversy.
