Ahead of Time

Prologue
A girl of about 11 stared at the last sentence she had read.
"Whoa¡K unbelievable¡K according to this, my
ancestors had the power to change all this¡K stop this¡K
and they didn't do it. Why? Were they too afraid? Did they not
know how to fight it? Or maybe¡K" Her head snapped
up as she realized the most likely conclusion. After thinking
for a few minutes as to how she would do this, the girl nodded,
as if it was final. She flipped through the book, and finally
found what she was looking for. She picked up a card that contained
a fairy that had its eyes closed and was leaning against the
side of the card. "Sleep," she murmured. Quietly,
she unzipped her pocket, and pulled out a card that was entitled,
"The Dream." But it was not the dream card we know.
It had a young woman; her black hair tied back in a neat, hexagon-shaped
bun. A long, keyhole tank top had large, balloon-shaped¡K
things coming out at the sides, which appeared to be ribbons
sewn back on to themselves. She was also nibbling on a rose,
which was apparently growing out of her index fingernail.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, you are about to witness the first
use of a Trial card," the girl scoffed sarcastically to
herself. "But don't fail me anyway, or else I'll never
use you again," she scowled at the card.
She put the two cards next to each other, and whispered an incantation.
She fell asleep in an instant.
