Chapter 3-The Search for the Truth
After she paid for the cat, she bid the boy who said
he was Syaoran's brother goodbye, and set off back
home-since Syaoran wasn't in Hong Kong after all. She
sighed. 'And I came all the way here.just for
nothing.'
"Hey, wait up!" the boy called after her. She spun
around, only to find herself staring into a pair of
chocolate brown eyes. The image of Syaoran flashed
through her mind-only for a second, though.
"I have a name, you know," said Sakura irritably.
"I know you do, it's Sakura," he said a little too
loudly.
Sakura stiffened. "How do you know.?"
The boy looked angry with himself, or maybe she just
read his expression wrong. "Um, um, he talks a lot
about you at home." he replied, somewhat lamely.
"Oh," she didn't really know what else she could say.
Then she asked, "So what's you're name then?"
Beads of sweat trickled off his cheek before he
replied, "My name, uh, my name is.*a long pause*.
('geez, what's wrong with this boy? He doesn't even
know his own name?' Sakura thought.) is.is Kwaihu," he
finally lied.
Sakura looked puzzled for a moment. Then: "Un.doesn't
Kwaihu mean literally 'fast tiger'?"
"Um, yeah." he mumbled.
"Well, I think it's a nice name," she stated as
'Kwaihu' turned a little red. "But how come animals
pop up in your names? Like Little Wolf.Fast Tiger."
"Un." he was at a loss for words.
"Oops, sorry," Sakura realized maybe she had prodded
at a personal question. "Well, anyway, where are you
heading to again?"
"Japan."
"Oh, same here!" she exclaimed. "Now I am, I mean."
Kwaihu looked confused. "Wait, you were going Hong
Kong.but now my brother (he said carefully) isn't
there anymore, you're deciding to go back to Japan?"
"Yep. But do you know where Syaoran is right now?"
"Sort of." He said slowly.
Sakura's face held an eager expression. "Where?" she
asked hopefully.
Syaoran didn't know where he came up with the name
Kwaihu, but he thought he was a genius all the same.
'Seriously, coming up with this totally untrue story
is a bit hard though,' he thought. 'I can't always
stall for time, or she might see through this whole
lie.' He was lost deep in his own thoughts. But he was
back within reality when a finger was prodding him
gently on the cheek. He turned around to find himself
lost in a pair of spring green eyes instead.
"Hello? I said, where?" she stared at him. Syaoran
felt himself blush.
"Huh? Where what?"
She sighed impatiently. "Really, you need to learn to
be like your brother more. Anyway, I said, where is
Syaoran?"
"Um." he strained his brain to think of yet another
lie to tell Sakura. Well, he did feel bad about
telling lies to her, but how else could he cover it
up? "Um. he was supposed to come with me to Japan, but
he got lost along the way." He blurted out so fast
that she couldn't really make out what he was saying.
"Oh no!" Sakura clapped her hand to her mouth. "What
happened to him?"
"The black cat got him." he trailed off. 'Did it?'
Syaoran thought to himself.
"And you didn't do anything to help him?" she asked,
horrified. 'Good job,' he angrily thought. 'You just
screwed up your conversation.'
"Um, well, I did, you see, but the cat just got hold
of him and disappeared."
Sakura looked close to tears. "I knew this would
happen," she murmured. "And I couldn't even get here
in time." a single tear glistened in the sunlight, and
scattered in a million droplets on the floor.
Syaoran shuffled his feet nervously. It was the worst
thing on earth he could do- to make her cry. Two more
tears slid down her cheeks. 'Third,' he counted
mentally. Then he did the only thing he could do.
Sakura was startled when suddenly a handkerchief was
placed before her. She had a quick flashback-when
Syaoran had offered her a handkerchief when she cried.
but that was because of what Yukito had told her.now
she was crying because of him. His handkerchief.
Sakura took it gratefully. "Thank you," she managed
to whisper.
"It's the least I could do," Kwaihu said
uncomfortably.
'This is no time to act all soft!' she thought. 'Stop
crying.' She wiped away the last of her tears. "What
are we waiting for? I'm going back to Hong Kong,"
"What for?" Kwaihu asked, puzzled.
"To save him!" she almost screamed. "Well, if you
don't care about your brother, it's fine with me, but
I'm his friend, and I'm going to save him!"
"Then I'm coming with you," he added quickly.
Sakura's face brightened a great deal more. "Do you
have a ticket back?"
"Sure-" he managed to get out before Sakura said-
"Good, then we can go together," and grabbed his arm,
dragging him all the way to gate thirteen.
On the plane, Syaoran kept on looking out the window
nervously. "Are you really sure you want to go to Hong
Kong?" he would ask over and over again.
And she would always answer, "Kwaihu!! How could you?
It's your brother we're going to save. Are you in or
not?"
Of course he would always have to reply, "Um, of
course, I was just asking because I'm, well," and he
would stop there. Well, there wasn't anything he could
do. telling a complete lie and having to deal with it.
What would he say when she found out he wasn't
Syaoran's brother and really Syaoran? Another lie? No.
What if they didn't find the supposedly lost Syaoran?
All these thoughts were creating a traffic jam in his
head.
In the Hong Kong's airport, Sakura looked around in
awe. "Wow, this place is so nice."
"Uh huh," was all he could think of for the moment.
There was a very long pause as the pair gazed back at
each other for a few minutes. Sakura smiled
unconsciously.and then the corners of Syaoran's mouth
turned up a few millimeters. Ever the realist, Syaoran
was the first on to break the silence, his face
crimson. "Er, now what do we do?"
"Huh?" Sakura asked dreamily. She was studying him
again.some how the mental image of a fourth grade
Syaoran popped back into her mind again. "Kwaihu," she
murmured.
"Yeah?" he ventured cautiously. Her eyes looked so
misted, he didn't know what to say. "Why don't we sit
down over there," he indicated to the chairs to their
left. "You look a bit, um, tired."
"I guess so." she agreed, but her tone was so far
away. As they sat down, Sakura yawned wearily as she
leaned against him. "Kwaihu.no, Syaoran, I miss you."
She slipped into unconsciousness. The pain of hearing
his own name and not being able to respond stung him,
but he could do nothing. 'After all, I'm the one who
chose to lie to her, not "Kwaihu",' he thought. Every
part of him longed to wake her up and say, "I AM
Syaoran!" but that wouldn't make sense to her. The
adventure for the truth would just have to continue. A
crystallized tear silently ran down his face unbidden,
and it mingled with those on Sakura's cheeks.
It was dark when she finally gained consciousness.
"Hoe?" she mumbled sleepily. As she shifted her
position on the seat, Kwaihu fell over because he had
been leaning on her.
He blinked the sleep out of his eyes. "Huh? Wha-? How
come we're still at the airport?"
"I don't know, but there's no one around here, which
is really creepy," she said. Then she opened her mouth
in horror at what she saw on his lap. The black cat
doll she had bought earlier had somehow made its way
out of the backpack. And it had placed itself on his
lap, sharp claws dug deep into the fabric of Kwaihu's
pants. "I have finally found you." it hissed out
slowly.
