The Past
"Who are you?" Sakura asked, agitated. Her first
impulse was to scream, but she didn't.
The creature turned around to face Syaoran instead.
"You don't remember?" it asked coolly, turquoise eyes
boring into brown ones. Its claws dug a little bit
deeper. "You really don't remember?"
A drop of sweat found its way down Syaoran's nose.
"N-No.." he stammered, partly because of the pain the
claws inflicted and partly because the cat was growing
bigger every time he said something.
"Don't lie, Syaoran," it smirked. "I feed on your
lies."
"What are you talking about?" he tried to shove the
creature off his lap, but its claws and newfound size
kept it firmly on.
It sneered. "Every time you lie, I'll grow bigger.
Tell some more, Syaoran, tell some more," it murmured.
"Stop!" shouted Syaoran, terrified. "Stop saying
all
this!"
"Syaoran?" Sakura screamed over his voice. "What
is
with this cat? What is it saying?"
"No! No! No!" he ranted. "Nothing!"
The creature shifted its wings and smiled, showing
one fang. "If you won't tell, I might as well tell the
whole story myself."
Syaoran covered his ears and shouted, "I don't know
what you're talking about!"
"Come, you two. I will take you into the past." And
their eyes suddenly held a blank look, and the
background colors sifted until it became something
like a jungle.
"Where are we?" Sakura came out of her daze.
"In the past..Syaoran's past to be exact," the
creature turned its gaze to her.
"But why would he live in a jungle or whatever it
is?"
"Ah, but that's for you to find out. Take your time
here, the memory will slowly unfold itself. Farewell
for now." The cat vanished.
Syaoran's eyes were large orbs now, and he was
breathing really hard. "No.." he managed to gasp out
as a cat just like the creature stepped out. Except
its fur was a chocolate brown instead of jet black
like the previous one. It was also much younger. Soon
after, a younger version of the black one also stepped
out of the brush. They touched noses and sniffed each
other cautiously.
"Ah, so it is you, brother," the black one said
graciously.
"Yeah, so?" the brown one growled back. "What
is with
you lately, Kwaihu?" At the mention of the name
Kwaihu, Sakura drew a sharp intake of breath. "What?"
she whispered.
"Coincidence?" Syaoran suggested tentatively, he had
calmed down some since they had first stepped into the
memory.
"Shhh, I want to hear what those two creatures are
saying," said Sakura, putting a finger on her mouth.
She seemed to have forgotten that this was actually
Syaoran's memory.
"Well, Syaomao.. It's the big day." The black cat
said decisively.
The brown one scuffed a paw in the dirt. "I know, I
know, the day I finally get to hunt on my own. Yeah,
yeah."
"Well, you have always looked up to me, and it's time
you become independent. After all, don't want to lose
to your older brother, do you?"
Syaomao bristled. "No."
Sakura thought something over again. "Hmmmm..
Syaomao. Syao-is little, just like in Syaoran, except
mao means cat. Little Cat-Little Wolf. Strange." Then
she turned back to the scene.
