This is the last smile that I'll fake for the sake of being with you.
Now, finally, I hear my own voice and it's always been here...silent all these years.
I remember a movie I watched once. It was about a woman who just couldn't leave her husband, despite his continual violence towards her. She would make excuses for him, turn a blind (and often blackened) eye to his actions, telling herself over and over that it was her fault...she had made him hit her...
Like the majority of the audience who would watch that film at some point in their life, I couldn't understand what was wrong with her. Why didn't she just pack up and leave? Why did she put up with all that shit from him? In all our ignorance, we don't realise that she can't. Love is blind. And when, in the name of love, someone directs abuse at another, its understandable that their self esteem will be a little less than zero. I won't pretend to know what it's like to be in that situation, but I understand some of the psychology behind it.
You decide whether you look at your reality or live pretending these feelings don't exist.
Tori Amos
One of my friends was abused by her husband. He raped her, beat her, put her in the hospital on more than one occasion. All the beauty within her heart died and she withered like a flower.
But one day, something changed, I guess. I wasn't there to see it, we met while she was going through divorce proceedings but in the years since then, I've seen her gradually build her strength back up. Tiffany, you're an inspiration. To still see the beauty in the world, and to trust someone enough to fall in love again, you're an inspiration.
