Feelings Through Film
Films as dreams. Films as music. No art passes through our conscience in the way that film does, and goes directly to our feelings, deep down into the dark rooms of our souls.
Author Unknown.

Fight Club
1999

This is your life and it's ending one minute at a time.
Narrator

You're not your job. You're not how much money you have in the bank. You're not the car you drive. You're not the contents of your wallet.
You're not your fucking khakis. You're the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world.

Tyler Durden

As someone who hates violent movies, I avoided this when it first came out...but one night I actually gave it a chance and wow, was I surprised...this movie isn't what I thought it would be at all. It actually has a storyline for one, and a pretty interesting makes-you-think one too... I'm impressed ~g~

High Fidelity
2000

What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns or watching violent videos, that some kind of culture or violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands, of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable, or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?
Rob Gordon

Definitely one to watch this one, if you're in the mood for an alternative kind of comedy. This doesn't rely on slapstick mishaps but instead sources its humour from just unbelievable acts and great one liners. This had my housemates and I in hysterics... and hey, it's one for the music lovers too. ~g~

American Beauty
1999

Sometimes there's so much beauty in the world I feel like I can't take it, like my heart's going to cave in.
Ricky

My job requires mostly masking my contempt for the assholes in charge, and, at least once a day, retiring to the men's room so I can jerk off while I fantasize about a life that less closely resembles Hell.
Brad, referring to what Lester had said.

Simply put, this movie took my breath away. I loved it... besides the wit and the entirely ingenius plot, there's this depth to it which just makes me think "wow..." I wasn't expecting it to be this good; there was such hype about it, I was sure it was just more Hollywood drivel. But was I ever surprised... this is one of my all time favourites...

Cruel Intentions
1999

You spend all your time preaching about waiting for love. Well here it is. Right in front of you. And you're going to turn your back on it.
So I guess we're just fucked.
I'll move on. But you are going to have to spend the rest of your life knowing you turned your back on love.

Sebastian

I remember going to see this with my friends; we didn't have any clue as to what it was about. Wow, was I shocked. Nothing like I thought it would be... and so entirely impressive at the same time. It has a very clever plot... and the soundtrack kicks some serious ass... I still love Colorblind ~s~

The Crow
1993

Abashed the Devil stood and felt how awful Goodness was.
T Bird

A building gets torched. All that is left is ashes. I used to think that was true about everything. Families, friends, feelings. But now I know that sometimes, if love proves real, two people who are meant to be together, nothing can keep them apart.
Sarah

I can't even explain what I like most about this film... it's dark, it's different, it's surrounded by a tragedy outside of its own script, but beyond the guns and the violence, it's actually touching. There's a certain beauty to love that doesn't die, and the vengefulness that can arise out of unnecessary loss. If you haven't seen it by now, my God... seek help ~l~ (and while you're at it, stop by your local video store and rent it!) ~l~

Labyrinth
1986

Give me the child. Through dangers untold and hardships unnumbered, I have fought my way here to the castle beyond the Goblin City to take back the child that you have stolen, for my will is as strong as yours, and my kingdom is as great.
You have no power over me.

Sarah

I love this movie... everything from the awful acting and the questionable costumes (David..why those leggings? WHY?!) I can't remember when I first watched it, but most of my childhood games were based around it... definitely a lifelong favourite ~s~

The Matrix
1998

The Matrix is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth
Morpheus

To deny our own impulses is to deny the very thing that makes us human
Mouse

Alot of people like this movie for the special effects. Some people like it for the soundtrack, or the actors, or the fact it's science fiction. I like it because it makes me think... It isn't just your typical kind of movie. It's amazing. ~s~

What's Eating Gilbert Grape?
1993

I would hope that people might view their fellow beings, all beings, with more empathy, more compassion, with a desire to understand. Even if they can't know why people are the way they are, to understand that they're probably that way for a good reason.
Peter Hedges, screenwriter/author

I know it's one of those mushy films that was never intended to be a blockbuster. But there's just something about this film.. it's about acceptance for who you are, beyond your appearance, beyond what people think of you, beyond all the jokes and the teasing. And another thing which struck me about this film ~ it has Leonardo DiCaprio... actually doing a really good job acting.. ~faints~

Blade
1998

The world you live in is just a sugar coated topping. There is another world beneath it. The real world.
Blade

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" for adults ~grynz~ With the very lovely Stephen Dorff (looking a lil worse for wear, it has to be said) and an absolutely kick ass soundtrack, this movie just rocks ~S~

Stepmom
1998

You know every story, every wound, every memory. Their whole life's happiness is wrapped up in you. Every single moment.
Isabel

Oh_my_God. I started crying about half way through and I didn't stop until after the credits had finished. I think I cry so much at this because I identify with the majority of what happens... Either way, no movie has stirred up so much emotion since My Girl. I don't care if it is a soppy chick flick. I'm a gal, what else would you expect? ~s~

The Shawshank Redemption
1998

Let me tell you something, my friend. Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.
Red

Get busy living, or get busy dying.
Andy Dufresne

After being completely blown away by the novella, a sense of curiosity led me to watching the film... if anything, I expected it to be a poor likeness. So just imagine my surprise when not only was it pretty much identical to the book, it was almost as good too.. a rare find these days ~tut tut~ ~S~

My Girl
1991

Weeping willow with your tears running down,
why do you always weep and frown?
Is it because he left you one day?
Is it because he could not stay?
He found shelter in your shade
You thought his laughter would never fade
On your branches he would swing
Do you long for the happiness that day would bring?
Weeping willow stop your tears
For there is something to calm your fears
If you think that death has ripped you apart
I know he'll always be in your heart.
Vada's Poem

Post-Labyrinth, this film made up the rest of my childhood.. I've watched it so many times I know the script off by heart, back to front and inside out. And yes, it can still make me cry, sometimes ~blush~
