Zorkie (male) and Zekee (female) are Solomon Island Skinks, also known as Monkey Tail Skinks, and are native to the Solomon Islands. They are about 5 yr. old and a breeding pair. They surprised us with their first offspring on Feb. 25, 2000. We named their young, Chaplin as it has a cute little black mustache like Charlie Chaplin had. My husband and I were so excited when Chaplin was born because we didn't even know that Zekee was gravid. SURPRISE!!!
They are very affectionate, and love to be held, which is unlike anything we've read on the species. Just goes to show you, science doesn't know everything. They are vegetarian, and enjoy such treats as mango, and banana along with their veggies.
When asked to describe them to sombody who's never seen one, I usually say they kind of look like a camoflagued cucumber with feet a pointed head and a long slender tail. Of course, this usually gets a very unusual response.
We love all our animals the same and make sure they all get equal time, if not, trust me,,,THEY LET US KNOW! They will sit and stare out at us and make us feel guilty till we take them out and give them equal time. Of course they are all housed separately, but in addition we have 1 male Black Tegu - Skeezix; 1 female Uromastyx - Kritchet; 2 Blue Tongue skinks (M/F) George & Gracie; a 2 yr. old Solomon Skink - Crunchy; and of course Chaplin. Not to mention 4 cats that keep their eyes open for wandering reptiles, and usually run and hide when they see one.
