One day while the mighty king of all beasts, the Lion, was walking throught the Magic Forest, he stopped by a pool to rest and have a cool drink from the pool. As he stepped to the edge of the pool, he saw the reflection of a beautiful little Marmoset monkey perched in the tree nearby. Immediately he found himself madly in love with the exquisite creature, but after some meditation, he became very sad. He realized how large and mighty he was and how tiny and delicate the little Marmoset looked. But as the days passed, he still could think only of his love for the Marmoset. The Fairy Godmother came upon the Lion, and seeing him so sad, asked if she could help him. After listening to his story, the Fairy Godmother said, "Oh King of All Beasts, I will grant your wish." The Fairy Godmother waved her magic wand and the Lion was made as small as the little Marmoset. To this day, the little monkey-faced Pekingese has some of the characteristics of the lion about him.
I think now is a good time to rescue some of my remaining pride by telling you about some Pekingese history!! Us Pekingese are truly an "imperial" dog, with a history that goes back to ancient times, as far back, some say, as 2000 B.C. For centuries, us Pekingese were worshipped in the temples of China, and it was custom of the Emperor to select four Pekingese who were to become his "bodyguards." These four would precede the Emperor to the Chamber of Ceremonials on occasions of state. Two announcing his approach at correct intervals with barking, the other two daintily holding the hem of his royal robe in their mouths. Theft of or damage to one of the royal dogs was concidered to be a crime punishable by death.
