I am 27 years old and am currently enjoying life thoroughly. What else? I am a typical Saggitarian in the western astrology and typical wood Rabbit (or hare) in the eastern for those who are interested. I have a celtic renactment name of Sorcha (pron: sor - ra - ka, meaning 'bright one') and am also known as firefox or ceren (pron Se - ren, meaning 'the star', it's Welsh, I think). I have a tarot card of the Star. I am usually known by the name Phoenix, or Blue Phoenix, although my Christian name is used at University!!
I write a little poetry and the occasional short story. I can sing, recite some norse and celtic legends, hand spin, weave and sew ( not that there's much call for that nowadays!) and leatherwork a little. I love walks in the country and have helped teach swordplay to the next generation of renacters in my old group.
I enjoy reading Liberty Meadows (Frank Cho) and Linda Medley's Castle Waiting (both sequential art, (posh term for comics)) , listening to many different kinds of sounds (from Bloodhound Gang to Beethoven, Meatloaf to Clannad and the Goon Show) and doing my degree and runic research. My favourite film is The Princess Bride, although it is quite old now. The book is really good, if you can get hold of it. On the subject of books, I enjoy anything by Terry Pratchett ( what more need I say!) Laurell K Hamiltons 'Anita Blake, vampire hunter' series, ('Guilty Pleasures', 'The Laughing Corpse', etc.) Simon Greens work, especially 'Blood and Honour' and 'Blue Moon Rising' (also 'Beyond Blue Moon' which I have just finished reading), Janet Evanovich's 'Stephanie Plum' series, ( 'One for the Money' (soon to be made into a film!!) 'Two for the Dough', etc.) Brian Jaques 'Redwall' series, ('Redwall', 'Mossflower', etc.) Robert Asprin's 'phule' and 'myth' series' and also Thraxas, Thraxas and the warrior monks' and 'Thraxas at the races', although I forget the author. I also like 'Children of Men' by P D James, it's wonderful alternate future that really gets you thinking. As for TV, the only thing I'll watch apart from the occasional nightly News is 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer'. Let see, small blonde chick suffering life growing pains and battling demons in her spare time. We like. Spike..Hmm.... what can I say? One of the best anti hero's I've seen in a long time. The sense of humor is right up my street.
Who am I anyway? I am not a day-tripper into the subject of runes. I have studied the subject for nearly 8 years on my own and have been told I know the subject very well.
I was first given a set as a gift on my 17th Birthday. I glanced at the book, I figured out I knew everything instantly (As 17 year olds are prone to do) and put the book and set of runes in my black hole of a room. A couple of room cleans later, they came back out and I started with the infernal emotion of curiosity. Soon I was hooked. I read every text available to me, (not very many) and started practising on my family and friends.
About 4 years ago, while in hospital for 3 weeks, I decided to start writing down my findings and found the easiest way was to write down each books interpretation of each rune. This turned out to be a bigger task than I had first anticipated as I am still doing it.
I now have a Rune Meanings folder and Rune History folder sat on my shelves. They contain hand-written notes, photocopies, newspaper and magazine articles and the like. I still add to them when I find something new.
The most important thing I have found is to date my work. Every note, every reference, every article, so that paths can be refollowed and refreshed, by someone else, if necessary. Also try and keep a rune journal, detailing what steps you take and when. It will also remind you of things you still have to follow up on!
I ventured into the world of casting runes professionally 4 years ago and went from inexperienced beginner to semi – professional in that time. I have cast at Viking age Re-enactment Shows, White weddings, Pagan festivals, Psychic fairs and had a stall in the Granary Wharfe Shopping centre in Leeds, England for three months over Christmas, 1999.
As a link to this page you will find an essay I wrote in 1999 for my then current educational course. It's about 5 1/2 thousand words long and as soon as I figure out how to paste the appendix pictures in, I will do. It's a discussion on how runes fit into modern society and wether they have a place or not. It makes interesting reading but you might want to wait, if you are a complete beginner!
I admit the resume isn’t very impressive with regard to what I could have achieve in 7 years, but I have been researching and learning off my own back, and so progress has not been as fast as it could have been.
I haven't done as much as some, indeed my website writing skills are positively terrible but at least I have had slow progress and have not mastered the technique straight away, as some modern authors seem to have done!
Enough about me, go and read about the runes ...It's what you came for, isn't it?!
There are links back to the main page, the essay pages and a page on how I cast the runes
