Chapter Three
What was that? Who had ruined her dream? Regina sat up in bed. The ringing sound finally registered in her ears. What rings at this hour? It’s not the nurses. She sat up, and was able to focus on the ringing sound. The phone. Duh!
“Hello?” the eleven-year-old Cara Anderson answered the phone. Finally! The ringing stopped. Now I can get back to sleep, Regina thought, lying back in her bed again. “Oh, okay...Yeah, I’m sorry too… Are you sure you can’t…? Uh-huh… Yeah, I understand… Well, I guess I have to tell her… Yeah, she’ll be upset… No, I’m sure she won’t blame you… Well, good-bye.” Cara hung up the phone.
“Regina—“ Cara said, coming over to Regina’s half of the room.
“Yeah?” Regina sat back up, rubbing her eyes. “Who called so early? It’s barely morning!”
“Um, Regina?”
“Yeah?”
“It’s one-thirty in the afternoon.”
“Oh.”
“Well, Lila called.”
“And?”
“She… she can’t get the tickets. I’m sorry.” Regina thumped her head back down on her pillow. She felt like crying. But I won’t, she vowed. Never cry. Never.
