Medieval Square
My son informed me that this one reminded him of his toy castle and knights. So, we named this the Medieval Square. This would make a nice blanket for a man.

small amount of 3 ply worsted weight yarn
Col A: variegated (I chose dark colour, and the variegated yarn used in the example was actually 4 ply)

Col B: gray

size 4.5 crochet hook.



Special stitches:

Cluster (CL): YO, insert hk into 1st ch 2 sp, yo & draw up a loop, yo & pull through 2 loops on hook, yo, inset hk into second ch 2 sp, yo & draw up a loop, yo  & pull through 2 loops on hk, yo & draw through all 3 loops on hk: CL made.


with Col A, ch 4, sl to form a ring

RND 1: ch 2 (counts as first hdc) 11 hdc in ring, join with sl to first hdc

RND 2: ch 3 (counts as first dc now and throughout) dc in next st *ch 3, dc in next 3 sts, rep from * 2 MORE times, ch 3, dc in next st, join with sl to first dc. finish off col A

RND 3: join col B in any corner ch 3 sp, ch 3, 4 dc in same sp, * ch 2, sk next st, sc in next st, ch 2, sk next st, 5 dc in corner sp, rep from * 2 MORE times, ch 2, sk next st, sc in next st, ch 2 sk next st. join with sl to first dc.

RND 4: ch 3, dc in next st, 3 dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts *ch 2, work CL,  ch 2, dc in next 2 sts, 3 dc in next st, dc in next 2 st, rep from * 2 MORE times, ch 2, work CL,  ch 2, join with sl to first dc. Finish off col B

RND 5: join col A with sl in same st as joining, ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc in next 2 sts, *(hdc, ch 3, hdc) in next st, hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in ch 2 sp, hdc in CL, 2 hdc in next ch 2 sp, hdc in next 3 sts, rep from * 2 MORE times, (hdc, ch 3, hdc) in next st, hdc in next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next sp, hdc in CL, 2 hdc in next sp, join with sl to first hdc, finish off Col A

RND 6: join col B with sc in any corner ch 3 sp, ch 3, sc in same sp *sc in enxt 13 sts, (sc, ch 3, sc) in ch 3 sp, rep from * 2 MORE times, sc in next 13 sts, join with sl to first sc.

RND 7: ch 1 TURN, starting in same st as joining, *(sc in next st, tr in next st) 7 times, sc in next st (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner sp, rep from * 3 MORE times, join with sl to first sc. Finish off col B

RND 8 : with right side facing you, join col A with sc in any st, work sc in each st around, working 3 sc in corner sps. Finish off
