Introduction

When we come to the edge of all the light and take a step into the darkness of the unknown, we must believe one of two things: either we will find something firm to stand on or we will be taught to fly. Serenity always involves a process of "becoming" into someone who has happiness, peace and spirituality. Serenity involves striving for meaning and purpose which is central to our existence. This search for meaning launches us on a journey in which all aspects of our life, including periods of hospitalization, can become avenues to deeper understanding. By sharing our journey with others we can confront our wounded emotions and limitations, and find a place for healing and growth. Although our definition of "Serenity" is broad, I would like to remind you that happiness begins within the individual as serenity can only be found within.

The purpose of this web page is to explore the concept of serenity in the context of providing nursing care for the client. In this web page I will discuss the important characteristics of serenity, and will suggest possible nursing interventions.

Definition of Serenity

Robert and Messenger define serenity as "an inner peace that is sustained during both good and bad times" (Roberts & Messenger, 1993, P.327). Serenity is distinct from joy, an intense, fleeting emotion dependent on external event, or contentment, a satisfaction with what one has. Serenity is not dependent upon either events or possessions, and even though it is analogous with peacefulness, it can be maintained during tumultuous times. Most importantly, it is a state of mind that is learned and maintained through personal effort.

Serenity is a home for all who seek safety, honor, respect, trust, peace and kindness. It is a land ruled by gentle and wise

Gifts of silence
With my silence I give you
everything,
permission to laugh,
to cry, to be
silent too.
