Is This My Room ??

While living in Wa. we were in the process of moving. We had moved the horses, Miki and I had gone back to the old place to do some cleaning. We had the mare up close to the house because she was due to foal and I didn't want her foaling out in the pasture. When we got back to the new place we couldn't find the mare, we looked everywhere, no fences were down, no gates open. Finally my stud whinnied, my mare answered him.... FROM INSIDE THE HOUSE! Miki and I looked through the window and could see her in the hallway. The house was built in an L shape and she was in this massive hall. Miki went through the living room to come up behind her, I opened the back door for her to come out...she slammed the door shut on me with her nose, then turned sideways with her head in the laundry room and her butt in the hall, blocking the back door. I finally was able to reach through the door, back her into the hall with her head facing me and get the door open. She then, very calmly, strolled out the door and down the steps.... but she left me a VERY large and wet deposit in the hall. We have pictures that show she had explored the whole house. She didn't break anything or knock anything over. Dusty had always joked about her having the foal in the house...and it looked like she was checking out the place to see if it was suitable. This is about the funniest and most unusual story I have ever heard and if I had not been there I wouldn't believe it! :-) Naomi D

Nellie T and Oh Boy

Oh Boy figured out this weekend how to lift the chain off the hook to open the gate to the pasture he shares with Nellie, Cinnamon, a 26-year old mule named John Henry and a 24-year old thoroughbred gelding named Pepe. As Julie drove up to  the farm to feed tonight, Oh Boy had just opened the gate inward (it won't open out) and let the inmates escape. All of them ran out bucking and snorting except Nellie who just stood by the open gate nickering at Julie.   After Julie got the escapees back into the pasture  where they are fed in troughs, she brought Nellie into her stall where she eats and gets brushed (as befits her senior curly status). When they walked back toward the pasture, Oh Boy was standing at the gate nickering to Nellie. As they got closer, he reached around the fence post, pulled off the chain, and pulled the gate inward so Nellie could come back into the pasture.    Charles (who owns the farm) thinks curlies are the smartest horses he's ever seen. We think he's right.  ps Charles then put a bolt snap on the chain and a u-nail on the post. Enough is enough.

Rex and the Hen

The Ostrom's stallion, Mela's Silverado Rex, had a pet hen. When they got him, they had to do some changing around to make a separate area for him. There was a hen who had taken to nesting in the hay rack. When the hay was placed in it, the hen would immediately settle in & Rex would begin pulling it out at the bottom. She fussed at him & he continued to eat, careful not to touch or hurt her, but lower & lower she would go down the hay rack until there little left for her. This went on for several years. Then one day they found the hen dead of old age. Rex went into deep depression, wouldn't eat & was totally devastated & started losing weight. They began to wonder what they would have to do to snap him out or at least get him eating again. About that time, one of their wild outdoor cats had some kittens & one day they saw one of the kittens had become separated from the rest & was passing into his pen. The kitten was so young, it's eyes were hardly open & it could hardly walk much. They just knew that Rex would step on it by accident & kill it as it was so tiny, but he saw it & gently picked it up by the nape of the neck & started carrying it around. Needless to say, he had found his new pet! He carried it around alot & eventually when it grew enough, it would climb up on the top rail of his pen, he would go to the cat & it would then hop onto Rex's back & would curl up & go to sleep there.
