
The Shuswap Training and
Employment Program provides opportunities for all First Nations individuals and
communities in the STEP service area to achieve economic self-sufficiency
through training and employment that support locally defined needs.
The main objective is to provide work experience, training (on- and off-site)
and counselling to the long-term employed, youth, women, persons with special
needs, and those workers threatened with unemployment.
Eligible employers include First Nations communities (bands), organizations, and
Aboriginally controlled business ventures.
STEP Programs:
Job Creation Program
Provides training and/or work experience for persons
who are currently receiving EI, have received EI in the last 3 years, or have
been on maternity leave in the last 5 years.
Direct Purchase Program
To provide funding to purchase individual seats for
various vocational programs as well as specific programs from community groups
or other training agencies.
Job Development Program
Provides training and work experience for people who
have been unemployed or in receipt of SA.
Youth Development Program
Designed to provide work experience and career
development opportunities, for students and unemployed youth between the ages of
15 and 29.
Service Delivery Assistance Program
Delivers employment assistance such as counselling,
job placement, career workshops and referral activities through organizations in
the community.
Workplace Training
Skills development or upgrade for employees working
for Aboriginal bands/organizations with the goal of enhancing the overall
organization.
Strategic Initiatives
To be used as financial leverage in support of
training and employment opportunities for individuals of Aboriginal ancestry.
Agencies providing such opportunities may be eligible.
