Bridges of Stone
BRIDGES OF STONE

It had been two weeks since his parents had kicked him out of the house. And he was still angry with them. He couldn’t believe they had done this to him. So, what, he was having sex with a girl. Okay, he was having sex with Amory, the one girl his parents had asked him to stay away from.

He knew that they were right, she was only a temptress, but he just loved the way she made him feel, and he loved the way she felt, soft and supple.

So they had decided to get an apartment together and move in with one another and then they could be with each other whenever they wanted and they didn’t have to worry about his parents breathing down their necks.

But, things had gone wrong with Taylor’s plan and he had begun to realize that his parents were right, and he was really starting to wish that he had just listened to their rules.

A week after he and Amory had moved in with each other, she had realized that she had control over his emotions and that she could have him whenever she wanted. So, that meant that she had left and she came back really late every night just so she could have a roof and Taylor’s sex.

Taylor knew she had a boyfriend on the side and he had no idea of how to go about confronting her about it and how to put a stop to the games. He also had no idea how something so beautiful like the relationship that they had had, had turned into something so crude and unreal.

“You can only push someone so far
you can only break so many hearts
we used to be love one another
now it's lust for your lover
Baby, I was trying to burn bridges of stone”

”Taylor, I’m home,” Amory called out as she opened the door at going on two o’clock in the morning.

“Hi,” he replied to her announcement, gloomily.

“Why so down baby?” she asked sitting down next to him on the bed and rubbing his shoulders.

“We have to talk,” he said not wanting her to touch him like that.

“Talk about what?” she asked trying to seduce him, she knew what he had to say, she knew that he’d been wanting to say it since they had moved in together, but she needed this apartment and she needed his money, he couldn’t ask her to leave.

“Stop, okay… Just stop, we have to have a serious conversation and this time, what you’re trying to do won’t work,” Taylor said, very obviously fed up with what was going on between him and Amory.

“I’m sorry Taylor, go ahead, talk about what you want,” she said pulling her hands off of his lower back and sitting on their bed next to him with her hands clasped in front of her.

“Well, I thought I loved you and I thought that you loved me in return, that’s why I was so willing to defy my parents and get this place, but as soon as we moved in here you were with other guys and now I can’t even associate with my family any longer.

“Zac on the other hand, when he started going out with Laina, my parents asked him to not have sex with her and to be true to her, and he listened so, here they are, my parents love her and now they are getting married. I just wish that I had abided by their wishes. I mean, I know, I’m an adult and I can make my own decisions, but they’ve been through more than I have, and they probably know better than I do.

“So, I guess what I’m trying to say is, is that, we’re going to have to break up. I don’t think we’re right for each other any more. We’re going to break up and I’m going to go back to my parents and ask their forgiveness and hopefully, they’ll let me come back. We’re over Amory,” he said to her, turning his head away, he couldn’t face her on the day she broke his heart.

“But, Taylor, no, just wait, I’ve told you I need to figure out why I want to be with you and I’m just with those other guys so I can tell what’s right and what’s wrong, please just wait for me…” Amory begged him.

“You can only wait
you can only wait so long
In this game we play,
can't tell right from wrong
you can only wait so long”

“If you would please start packing your stuff, and I’m going to go on a walk and when I get back, I’d appreciate it if you were gone,” Taylor told her as he began to walk out of the door.

“No, Taylor!” he heard her call out from behind him.

As soon as Taylor stepped outside he realized that it was two o’clock in the morning on a cold November morning and that all he was wearing were a pair of pajama pants. He was immediately freezing and he wrapped his arms around himself in a desperate attempt to warm himself.

At that moment he had the temptation to go back and ask Amory for forgiveness, because she had always made him feel so warm, not only physically but emotionally as well.

“Girlfriend kick you out?” a bum called out as Taylor walked past him, but he just ignored him. Taylor knew he could hold his own if something happened to him out there that night, but his heart felt so weak. He knew that he had loved Amory, but the things that she had done to him, maybe he had just loved the sex that she so willingly gave to him. Maybe he didn’t even know what love felt like yet, and he had mistaken it.

He figured that what he was trying to make out of their relationship was just like trying to burn stone. It just wouldn’t work out the way that Taylor wanted it to.

“Here come the memories of yesterday
Here's the poetry,
of all those things I couldn't even say
You can only wait so long
Before your flower petals are all gone
Baby, I was trying to burn bridges of stone
Ain't nobody crying for what used to be home”

”Taylor! Wait!” Amory called out running up behind him.

“You’re supposed to be packing,” he said to her without stopping.

“I know, but I just need to understand better, why are you doing this?” she asked him again. He knew she was just trying to stall and possibly get him to take her back, but he would explain it over and over again, but he had sworn to himself that he wouldn’t take her back.

“I should’ve never told you that I loved you until I was sure, I’m only twenty years old for god’s sake, I don’t know what love is, but when I told you that, I just set myself up for heartbreak, because you don’t know what love is either. I wish that you would’ve just held me and made me feel that our decision to betray my parents was a good decision, but you didn’t, you just betrayed my trust,” he told her hoping that she got the message.

“Why couldn't you hold on to me?
I was right here, laying in our bed
all those things I didn't see
all those things I never should have said”

“But, Taylor, what we have is so special and everything we’ve been through is just a game so that we can be able to tell if we’re truly meant to be with each other or not,” Amory said trying to convince Taylor, but she wasn’t saying the right things, and that was the first time in her life.

“That’s not right though, why should we have to play games with each other in order to know that we are right for each other. And these games that we’ve so willingly played have blinded us, we don’t even know why we’re together any more,” Taylor said as he finally stopped walking and turned to face Amory, he felt he could face her now, he had the strength to make his point.

”In this game we play,
can't tell right from wrong”

Amory said nothing, she didn’t know what to say, he had finally figured her out and now she had no where to go.

“Well?” Taylor asked her, he knew she needed to say something, he knew her well enough to know that she couldn’t be quiet.

“Taylor, I need you. Okay, I admit it, I was using you for so long, I don’t have anyone else, I have no family, no money, no home, and I knew that if I could somehow get you to love me, you could give me all of those things, but I never really loved you, but when you gave me a wonderful home, I started wondering why I didn’t love you, so I went out and I relied on other guys to show me why I didn’t love you, I couldn’t let myself love you, because I knew that this day would come, where you would figure out that I was using you and then you would break my heart,” Amory said as she started to cry, her explanation made no sense to Taylor, he didn’t understand why she had to lie to him to get his help. If she had needed his help, he would’ve willingly given it to her without her lying to him.

“Why couldn't you call out for me?
It's not like I was ever far away
Tie me to the edge and start to leave
There's nothing left here
But a million words to say”

”Amory, you make no sense to me, that’s why we’re not meant to be together. So, this is the last time we will be together, I’m sorry.” Taylor said, her sob story still not getting to him.

“But, Taylor, we have memories together, we’ve been through so much together with people trying to stop our relationship, won’t you miss the home that we built together? If this is good-bye then you’ll be breaking my heart,” Amory said looking up at him and noticing that he had no more sadness in his eyes and he was gazing ahead of him.

She turned to face where Taylor was staring and she noticed that they had walked the three miles to Taylor’s parent’s house.

“So, this is good-bye?” she asked again.

”We all have memories
And I have spent my time in vain
Here's to our enemies
And I will leave you with no pain
We will find a way somehow
In this running just to know goodbye
Baby, I was trying to burn bridges of stone
You won't find me crying for what used to be home”

“Amory, I don’t want to break your heart, I don’t want you to feel pain, so you go on to the apartment and you can stay there, I’ll pain for the rent and utilities, just promise me something,” he said taking her hand.

“Anything,” she said her voice full of graciousness.

“Promise me that we’ll never have to see each other again and promise me that you’ll have all of my stuff packed and sitting in the foyer of the apartment by tomorrow afternoon, but don’t be anywhere near there… I never want to see you again,” Taylor told her looking her in the eye, he wasn’t meaning to be mean, but he meant it this time. He was tired of being used.

“I promise,” she said with happiness radiating through her voice, she was going to have a place to live and she could be with anyone she wanted, she wasn’t tied down to one person anymore. Her year with a rock star was fun, but she was ready for a change, and she was going to make sure that that happened.

“Good-bye,” Taylor called after Amory as she walked away.

Just then the porch light of his home turned on and his mom walked out.

“Welcome home, baby,” she said to him as he just stood there and stared, he couldn’t believe that it was this easy for his parents to accept him back.

“Thanks mom, I missed you,” Taylor said and he ran to her and hugged her. He was finally home.

“I’m no longer trying to burn bridges of stone.”
