This saga has the return of the evil Garlic Jr., who finds the planet Earth vulnerable since Goku isn't there and because he believes that he died in the fight and Namek. But Piccolo, Krillin and Gohan were there to fight Garlic Jr. and his men, they weren't strong enough, Piccolo even fell under Garlic Jr.'s power and became his slave. And Krillin had been too weak, it was up to Gohan and his powerful saiyan abilities were shown yet again while he grasped on.
