LOGAN CHIEF HELD ON KILLING CHARGE

Police Head Arrested Following Midnight Slaying of Brooks Carey

LOGAN, Nov. 3G.—A. D. Scuggs, chief of police of 'Logan, was in jail today charged with the slaying of Brooks Carey at the headquarters of the Logan fire department -shortly after midnight. The shooting was said by authorities to have followed an attempt by Scaggs to arrest Carey on a disorderly conduct charge They also said there had been ill feelings between the two men since the recent election. Carey had returned to the fire department headquarters after accompanying the firemen in responding to a fire alarm. Scaggs attempted to place him under arrest and was said by the officers to have shot the man when he resisted. Scagg-s was arrested by Deputy Sheriff Cam White, who had accompanied the police chief to the fire department building.

Carey was the son of Lawrence Carey. Scaggs predessors as cheif of police. The elder Carey, officers said, committed sucide while waiting trial on a charge for murder. Carey an active democratic worker is said to have incurred the enmity of Cheif Scaggs when he together with two companions H. S. Walker and Ira Eye are said to have charged the officer with buying votes on election day. The trio later took Lewis Collins, a Negro, before a notary public ,and obtained an affidavit in which Collins swore that Scagss had paid Collins $2 for his vote.

Last Wednesday Scusgs arrested Walker on a charge of being drunk -but \\alker was released by the mayor and no bearing has ever been held m the case.

Carey was shot in the right breast The bullet lodging in the spine. He fell to the floor at once and died before medical aid could be summond. The dat for Scaggs hearing has not been set

Jury to Probe Logan Slaying

Police Chief and Two Deputy Sheriffs Are Arrested

LOGAN, Nov. 17.—W)—circuit Court Judge Robert Bland today called a special session of the Logan county grand Jury to meet Wednesday to investigate the slaying of Brooks Carey when Chief of Police A. D. Scaggs sought to arrest him upon a charge of disorderly conduct.

Scaggs was arrested charged with the slaying shortly after it occurred and two deputy sheriffs, A. J. White and Milton Perry, were later placed in custody on a charge of conspiracy preferred by a brother of the dead man They were committed to Jail but the county jailer declined tonight to state whether they have been released on bail. Other officer were likewise secretive about the situation. Scaggs. White and Perry were arrained for a preliminary hearing before J. E. Pock appointed a special judge by Judge Bland to hear the case. Scaggs was bound over by the grand jury under $25,000 bond, while the bail for White and Perry were fixed for $10,000 each. All three were released after they posted the required bond.

While on the witness stand testifying, J. W. Becket, member of the Logan Fire Department, was forced to leave his chair to fight the blaze, causing the hearing to last from 8:00 until 11:30

INDICT POLICE CHIEF Logan Official Charged With First Degree Murder LOGAN, Xov 21.—An indictment charging first degree murder waa returned by a special grand jury today ag-ains* Arthur C. Seaggs. suspended .Logan police chief", in the slaying ot Brooks Carey last week. The grand jury reported no indictment against A. J. White and Milton Perry, Logan county deputy sherrifs, arrested on charges of conspiracy in The same case. The grand jury was discharged by Judge Robert Bland after making its report. Carey was Killed while Scaggs was attempting to arrest him upon a disorderly conduct, charge. At his own request, Scaggs was suspended, 'yesterday as police chief pending disposition of the charge against him. Reese Browning, a member of the Logan police force, was named acting chief.

TWO LOGAN DEPUTIES ARE HELD IN KILLING

Jailed in Connection With Carey Slaying

LOGAN. Nov. 17.—Two Logan County deputy .sheriffs were in jail today charged with conspiracy in connection with the slaying yesterday of Brook Carey while Chief Police A. D. Scaggs was attempting to place the man under arrest upon a disorderly conduct charge. The deputies. AJ. White and Milton Perry, were to have a hearing later in tho day on the charge which was preferred by Carl Carey a brother of the the dead man. The two deputies are alleged to have been with Scaggs at the time of the shooting. Scaggs also is under arrest.


Brook Carey was the Husband of Loney Conley. Loney Conley was the daughter of Ulyssis Wabash and Laura Auford Conley. Willie Conley, son of Jessie Conley of Harts Creek, had shot and killed his wife, Loney Conley, October of 1934
